[Generalities] Film

Recommend me a film. I own somewhere in the four-digits of DVDs but I'm running out of good movies to watch (or that I haven't seen so many times I can quote them). So. Recommend me a film.

Following - Christopher Nolan's first film, pre-Memento
La Jetee - short french film that inspired Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys

Also, if you haven't seen them yet, I recommend the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Girl Who Played With Fire, etc (I haven't seen the 3rd film in the series yet). I like them a lot and I definitely think they're worth seeing before Fincher's Americanized version of the franchise comes out.

If you love Rounders, see about picking up Deal. It's an indy flick that came out a couple of years ago. It's essentially the Color of Money for poker. Not the greatest cinematic work, but a fun movie if you're a poker player/enthusiast.

This was a Japanese movie to begin with? That sounds exciting.

Shall We Dance was indeed originally a Japanese film, but having seen them both, I actually recommended each of them independently of each other. There are things about the original Japanese version which are so rooted to the cultural context in which it was made, they don't translate at all. The American re-make uses the same series of events to tell a story which it then roots in its own cultural context of middle class America. The end result is different pictures, in the same frame.

Atonement? Ultimately, I'd say it's about regret.

It's a drama, a tragedy of errors you might say, about a pre-teen girl who tells a lie that destroys the happiness of two people she loves.

It's based on a book, which I haven't read so I can't compare, but I enjoyed the movie greatly.

Also, if you haven't seen Shadow of the Vampire, you should add that one to the list.

I'm too uncultured and crass to give you any legitimate suggestions.

But if you want something amusing, Preaching to the Perverted. You might find some Luci-isms in there. :P
