Katchoo had followed some of the others to the woods in one last vague hope that she'd see Emma; no joy there, and finally she headed back to the dorms and up to the room where she immediately headed Francine's way and reached out to pull her into a hug.

No verbal greeting, just . . . a hug.

Well, that certainly knocked Francine's vaguely pensive train off the rails. "Chewie?" she asked after a few seconds of silence, because some hugs were meant to be that way.

"There's nobody here for me," Katchoo said, muffled into her shoulder. Seeing her father would have been nice too, come to think of it. "All these visitors, and . . . I was hoping."

"Oh, baby." There wasn't anybody for Francine because there wasn't anybody for Francine; her dad wasn't dead after all, just off being a dickhead.

"I didn't think--" She didn't know what she didn't think, though. Mostly that Katchoo hadn't said anything, and so she'd been Not Saying Anything.
