162 Minutes to Midnight - Watchmen First Thoughts

I saw Watchmen tonight and it was pretty good. Although I'm reserving judgment until after I re-read the graphic novel, I did enjoy most of it. It was by no means perfect, however ( Read more... )

A pansy?! Are you kidding? I thought the cleaver scene was brutal enough. He didn't just bring it down once, but over and over and over... And anyways it was supposed to illustrate the first time he killed a criminal rather than just turning them in to the cops. Maybe the comic book drew it out more but honestly it would've been hard to make that scene darker without being a show-stopper. I think it was an effective compromise.

Yeah, that is much more twisted but maybe not quite so personal. Although I think it could've worked just as well... Rorschach walking away listening to the guy scream as he burned and tried to cut his hand off in vain (I doubt you could cut through bone with one hand)... that could've been just as effective as the moment when "Walter died and only Rorschach remained." I think Rorschach should've got more screentime regardless. He is a lot more interesting than the Comedian.

Yes I read it, which is what made me pay special attention to the soundtrack. It's really too bad the soundtrack is so lousy. I guess there are those who might find it fitting, as if merely using pop 60s songs makes it into a sardonic commentary on popular symbols--which it is--but it really didn't fit with the setting or the plot. It was jarring to suddenly hear Simon & Garfunkel, which really defeats the purpose. It honestly made the movie feel like a horrible fan-edited music video.

Yeah, the songs were totally cliched. The only one that kind of worked was "The Times They Are A' Changing," but mainly because that was the only song they picked that isn't used to death in previous movies. Try some other Wagner for instance, he did write more than one piece of music. How about anything else by Leonard Cohen?

I thought the thing that hurt the Comedian was that they cut out the whole reasoning behind his "figuring it out" that was in the book. In the movie he's just spying for the government. In the book, he has the same info many other people have, but he's the only one crazy enough to realize that Ozy is crazy enough to really do what it seems like he's doing.
