He wasn't supposed to be a normal parent, he was an obsessive alcoholic who couldn't deal with his wife's death. I thought his aloofness was part of his character.
(Huge spoilers in after this point)
And implausible, yes, the effects of a huge coronal mass ejection were greatly exaggerated--it wouldn't destroy everything on the face of the planet in a firestorm--but a large CME could shut down the power grid, destroy electronic devices, and bring telecommunications to its knees. They got a lot of the details right, like the northern lights visible from New York and the failure of mobile communications, so it certainly wasn't dumb even if the ultimate effect was unlikely

I hated Hostel until I saw Hostel 2, then I decided they both must be comedies, yeah. What clinched it for me was the girl with the eyeball wound in number 2.
Well it certainly wasn't scary! I haven't seen the second movie, but the first movie does build an ominous atmosphere at first... but it all falls away with the scene after he gets captured and is pleading with his tormentor in German, who then calls the attendant to get a ball gag. That, and Rick Hoffman, made it pretty obvious that it wasn't trying to be serious. I think it did a pretty good job of building suspense and then throwing it away with humour.
I hated it so much, I mean, I was foaming the mouth watching it the first time. Watching it again, I laughed much.
The eye I am referring to in pt 2 was just a really, really bad special effect. So bad and out of place that it was impossible to take the rest of the movie seriously at all.
I generally use torrents from mininova for mainstream films. For harder-to-find foreign or independent films I usually go to The Pirate Bay or Demonoid (which is a great source for audio books too).
Look for DVD or BD rips by well-known groups like aXXo or FXG (movies) or eztv (tv shows). The easiest way to gauge quality before you download is to get the torrent with the most seeds. For example, a search for Harry Potter by default sorts by date, which isn't very useful since a lot of it is crap. But if you sort by seeds you get the most popular on top, which is a nice compilation of the first 5 movies by aXXo
