After three years of this degree I am sick to death of studying films by white men about white men all the damn time. Especially after my class on Auteur theory was thirteen weeks of only straight while male middle class

I love Sofia Coppola!

I think Julie Taymor has done some amazing work, notably Titus. Miranda July's debut was awesome and her follow-up I've heard is great.

And Jane Campion and Gillian Armstrong of course.

I was ambivalent about Lost in Translation but I did think The Virgin Suicides was great.

Ooh, I'll have to look up Julie Taymor and Miranda July.

I love Nicole Holofcener. She makes movies about women, about the complex relationships they have with each other across generations and class, and they're often full of prickly, even unlikeable characters but they're very *real* believable, interesting people.

Seconding the Jane Campion rec too.

Christine Jeffs - her movies are really beautiful and have great, interesting female characters, though sometimes I don't love them all the way through, but I'm never bored.

I also really liked Sarah Watt's Look Both Ways, and friends also liked her follow up as well. Lisa Cholodenko's The Kids Are All Right is great. Lone Scherfig for An Education. Shirley Barrett's Love Serenade.
