Spring War debriefing

Mar 23, 2009 10:28

This weekend was Spring War, a big big national Amtgard event that was just an hour away. Even though I have no love for the society of Amtgard I tried to generate interest among my peeps to go, since it was a great way to see both dree and jillicious, Tollan, sharjinka and kalidascopeeyes all in one place. Eek and I were going to go on Friday night, but at the last minute I pushed for leaving Saturday morning rather than rush things and try to put up a tent in the dark. That paid off more than I expected. Spring War is really a four day event, so getting there after noon on the third day I guess they decided they would only charge us half price. I wasn't going to dispute it, so score! First found Linden and delivered her special package, a new very custom crown she'd ordered online. And she gave me a coronet of my very own! She's far too generous, and I'm not good at accepting gifts, but it was beautiful and I wore it all weekend. Now I have a tan line across my forehead. :D
Found our friends, garrickthewarri> and <lj user=, aka Dingus and Wingus, Savvy and Melena, my sisters and Cap'n Black, made camp with some of them (cuz they all camped in different places :P) and went to the "war". That is to say the big battle game that is the focus of the event. In short this game was completely mismanaged by the referees, and I spent at least an hour standing around waiting for anything to happen. My team got mowed over, but I did get to engage in fighting a couple times. Then more waiting while they "reset" the game. It was totally unbalanced (which was ok with me, really) and their choice to reset wasted a lot of time for no good reason. People were dieing left and right from friendly fire because noone knew who was who. It was... dum. I walked away after only one death.
Instead, I joined my squire in the ditch field where people were actually fighting. I don't know how long we fought, but I was up as long as my out of shape as could, and then we went for tent for beers. Wingus hung with me near the whole event. I hope I wasn't a drag. We wandered around. Caught up with our friends. Went on a booze run. Waited for the promised evening feast. Ate our own provisions. Waited for feast. Wandered. Waited. and waited...
WHAT THE CRAP! It's 10:45 and they haven't served?! Wingus, E and I went to Whataburger to find the drive threw 7 cars deep with Amtgarders. We went inside and met more. I tried not to be too critical of things, but I'm sure we were all thinking the same ugly thoughts. Came back, hit the rum, felt good. It didn't really matter that the event was the worst I'd ever seen. I was with my people and we brought our own good time.
And, then! And then! I saw this odd swaggering drunk come up on us with a goofy grin on his crooked face. I thought, "Somebody want some rum! Oh, good!" But I was sorta wrong. This was Julian who I haven't seen since 13 odd years ago when I played this game! I thought he's left to become an "adult" but he'd been in Amtgard all this time! He lives in Houston and has a beautiful wife and remembers me! We talked and talked and he was drunk of his ass! It was awesome! Then his wife, Chelsey, walked him back into whatever part of the darkness that he came from. We'll talk more online now.
Crashed out. Slept poorly on hard ground. Awoke. Broke camp early to miss the rush. J&T, D&W, S, and M, E&me all went to a little diner for breakfast that was excellent. We got there before the crowd of campers poured in, so we got our table. Food was slow because they were overwhelmed, but it was good. It was a great end to a good time at the worst event I could ever laugh at. All weekend I wanted to say, "We would never do this in Drandmir. We're not dumbasses. We're fukin bad ass." But I was good. I didn't say nuthin.
