Cave Rave

It seems like it's been forever since Chris has been to a real, proper blowout. There aren't exactly any clubs on the island for this sort of thing, and the last time Chris had any kind of party in his own hut, it'd taken him fuckin' ages to properly sort out the damage. As it was, he was still finding brownie crumbs and other people's coats when ( Read more... )

A couple of hours have gone by before Hermione has some time to herself. Harry's all but disappeared from sight, but Hermione knows that he's the more likely of the two boys to retain some amount of sense even when his sobriety is compromised. Ron, on the other hand, has broken away from her for the moment to find a restroom (and Hermione's not trying to think too deeply about that, assuming that the cave doesn't have any sort of interior plumbing). What she finds, though, is that when she doesn't have something or someone in particular to focus her attentions on, that the party becomes that much more overwhelming, people moving to her left and right and all in a frenzy; her nose wrinkles in distaste and she tries to back to the side of the cave, before she's managed to bump against someone.

"Pardon me, I'm so sorry, I should have watched-" Hermione's eyes widen slightly when she realizes who it is. "Oh, Luna. I didn't realize you were coming, too."

Luna tilts her head until all of her hair has fallen to the side, exposing her damp, glittery neck. "Why wouldn't I come? Draco's here too-- oh!" She remembers, very suddenly, that she means to do this tonight, even though she's suspecting that Hermione is sober, the silly girl.

"Hermione," she says, as clearly as possible, taking the other girl's face in her hands. "There is something I must tell you."

She makes a small noise in the back of her throat when there are hands suddenly on her face, carefully raising her hands to wrap them around Luna's wrists and coax them away. It isn't an unkind gesture; Hermione makes sure to be gentle enough to make it clear that it isn't Luna that she minds, but instead that she needs her space. The smile on her face is distracted from having it so quickly breached, but Hermione manages to collect herself again, her lips tentatively turned in a smile.

"Luna," she nods, a slight look of concern passing over her face. "Okay, something you must tell me... what is it?"

"Oh no," Luna says. "I had a speech, I made up a perfect speech and I forgot it after I told Harry and Ron. But the long and short of it is that I'm living with Draco Malfoy and I am in love with him and we have lots of sex, and that's everything I told everyone." She giggles. "Don't be angry, please, Hermione."

The smile does vanish from Hermione's face. Slowly. Because this isn't at all what Hermione has expected to hear from Luna tonight, at this party of all things, and the setting and timing of it all grates on her nerves.

After she considers it for a moment, she finally speaks.

"First of all, Luna, I already knew. There are certain things that Draco has done or said that made it plainly obvious, and who lives with whom isn't exactly a guarded secret on this island." Her lips press into a thin line. "Frankly, I don't mind if you live or are in love with Draco Malfoy, that's your choice as an adult and I don't think him particularly dangerous, but what I will say is that I do not want to hear about what you do in the privacy of your bedroom, and I think it was a poor move to make this confession to the boys when the both of them have clearly taken substances that alter their judgment."

After a pause, she sighs. "I'm not angry," she says quietly. "But I don't want to talk about this anymore here, specifically."

Luna steps back immediately, on light feet, putting the space back between them. She can't say she expected this, and her stomach flip-flops over into her knees and she's-- ashamed. The pleasant feeling from earlier evaporates, leaving trembling a bit against the music and lights and chemicals.

"I am an adult," she says, just loudly enough for Hermione to hear. "Aren't I. Because I've been here almost three years. Three years in which I have been otherwise alone." She blinks several times, and then touches her fingers to her cheeks. They come away shining with tears and glitter. "I'm sorry to have upset you so."

Luna turns away, and pushes her way through the crowds as best she can, seeking the night air and the sight of the moon.
