The thing about the elevator in the Compound is that Olive can't think of any earthly reason it should be there. Granted, this isn't, she's fairly certain, any version of earth she's familiar with, so reasons of that nature don't actually apply, but, in spite of knowing there's very little use in it, she continues looking for some measure of logic ( Read more... )

It was Earth, he knew that, but Peeta didn't like to actually say that much. It was weird enough as is and to tell people that his world was what theirs would eventually become was just too mean. People needed something to hope for, even if it was something as strange or little as the future being alright.

"Yeah. Probably. Well, if it makes you feel better Florida's gone? That's what it was called the little arm part, right?" He gestured, attempting to mimic the pennisula. "It's...not a happy place. This is better. Much better."

In spite of the topic, Olive stifled a laugh, back of her hand pressed to her mouth. "That does make me feel better," she deadpanned, "thank you." It probably wouldn't cheer Eduardo up any, and really, she didn't want anything submerged. That day wasn't here, though, not for her, and they were safe on the island, at least from that, and anyway, his little pantomime was something of a mood-lifter in its own right. She'd liked home and she missed it now, but she was intent on making the best of things here, so she nodded. "Yeah, this place has its perks. I mean it's better than that or, uh, a zombie apocalypse or... a war between wizards. Um... it's definitely more, more exciting than my home in a lot of ways, my home was just... normal and here we have dinosaurs."

"Yeah. I can definitely say that there are places that could be much worse," he agreed letting a smile crack across his features. Her enthusiasm was somewhat contagious and he liked it. It was too easy to get caught up in the darkness and gloom.

"I'm Peeta by the way. And I think you're forgetting that another perk is that there's a...um. I think it's called a ferris wheel here. That's pretty cool."

Peeta. Jackpot.

It's funny how knowing the stranger you're talking to is a guy your best friend's kissed changes things. At least, it makes you reevaluate what you've heard, but truth be told, it doesn't make much difference. Claire has solid taste and he seems like a nice guy. I mean, I'm firmly on her side no matter what, but I'm not about to hold it against him or Chris that they love other people. What I've heard, anyway. We can't always help that crap.

"Have you been on it?" Olive asked with a little groan of jealousy. "Ugh, lucky, I haven't yet, I so want to. I'm - I'm Olive, by the way, hi, it's nice to meet you. You're friends with Claire, right?" Whatever she would or would not hold against them, it was fully her duty to watch his reaction to Claire's name.
