Several months and another lifetime ago, Hiccup had needed a basket of fish and a lot of tricks to get the new tail on Toothless. It's Reynald who notices first, before the dragon's shadow has had a chance to fall over the ground. "Doofus!" he proclaims gleefully, waving his arms in the air at his flying friend. "Fly, Doofus fly!"

Robb follows his son's waving arms, and to his surprise, doesn't feel the apprehension that used to follow the flight of a dragon.

"Wave, Dada!" Reynald demands, and Robb does, one arm lifted in salute to the soaring pair.

Grey Wind, getting splattered a little himself, gives Toothless a wolfishly tolerant look and lays his head on his paws. There is just no teaching some creatures.

"I think," Robb whispers, leaning closer to Hiccup so he can be heard, "they might be one of the funniest things I've ever seen."

The scene itself makes him grin, but when Robb leaned over and whispered to him like it was some kind of great secret, Hiccup started laughing, letting it carry through and bend him at the middle.

Toothless rolled his eyes.

The laughter is contagious, and between Hiccup and Reynald, Robb is having a bit of trouble keeping it in. So he doesn't try, just joins them, instead, in laughing his fool head off.

After a while, Hiccup collapsed into the sand, even as his laughter subsided and he shook his head at himself. "I could smile at anything right now."

There were worse ways to be.
