"I voted for you," Kate said, appearing at Hermione's side and linking their arms. She was wearing a bright purple dress, one that would have been a little too short for any sort of party back home, but Tara wasn't here to tell her to put on a proper dress, so she'd worn it anyway. And Kate, having never been able to vote back home, was especially proud that someone she'd voted for had actually won. If this was what it felt like when your favourite candidate became the President, she could see why people got so excited about the whole process.

"I totally voted for you and you totally won and you are going to rule this island with your awesome fist," she continued. After all, her vote alone hadn't been the cause of Hermione winning. There had to be lots of people who thought she'd be good.

Such a little thing as linking arms was still so strange and foreign to Hermione, who'd had very few close female friends over the years- the best of which was Ginny, who was herself rather a tomboy and not prone to the girliest of side activities. She blinked at the arm which wrapped around her own, before giving Kate a broad smile a couple of seconds later, feeling a rush of gratitude. On a practical level, Hermione knew full well that she needed to spend time getting to know citizens of the island she hadn't met prior, but she wasn't about to argue against having a bit more time with her closest friends as well.

"Thank you," Hermione said first, tone full of gratitude and brimming emotion, a soft laugh bubbling under her breath. "While I'm not sure I'd ever be assertive enough as a representative of the people to rule with an iron fist, I certainly will do my best. But please tell me Harry didn't try to con you into a vote or something; I'm still so stunned that I made the Council that I'm trying to figure out... how."

"No way," Kate scoffed, waving her free hand absently. "One of the very best things about me, if I do say so myself, is that no one can con me into anything I don't want to do. And that includes voting for you. I did it because I know you'll be good at it."

And she did know it. There were certain people she was sure were just the ones who should be in charge. Though she and Hermione were close to the same age, she knew she'd never be the sort of person who could be in charge. Hermione, though, she was the perfect person for it and Kate had no doubt she'd do right by the people who'd voted for her.

"This is the first time I've ever voted. In anything," she admitted. "I didn't even vote for student council back home. I didn't really care, I guess." She had no idea when she'd become such a joiner.

Pleased in spite of herself, Hermione's gaze dipped with a sheepish smile, her hand automatically moving to brush down her upper arm, a nervous habit. Although it was most important, she knew, to have faith and confidence in herself, having the support of her peers wouldn't hurt. Biting her lower lip, Hermione brushed back her hair, having forgotten that she had taken great pains earlier in the day to tame the curls, and that they didn't need tending to at all.

"Well, admittedly, I've never believed in voting for voting's sake," Hermione mused, not sure how to further respond to compliments, but enjoying Kate's company all the same. "So if people don't care about a topic, I think it's right to abstain, and to be quite honest, a lot of student organizations choose their officers based on popularity rather than qualifications. Even here on the island, I think there's a risk of that."

"Yeah," Kate agreed. "And I didn't even really care. I mean, I didn't like most of the people I went to school with." It had been hard, being the kid of the 'crazy person' and although most people had stopped giving her a hard time by high school, it hadn't exactly given her the urge to be friends with them.

"I guess it could still sort of be like that here," she said, considering. "But... I don't know. It's stupidly optimistic of me, especially since I pride myself on my well won cynicism, but I think people here really care. About all of this."

"I don't think it's stupidly optimistic," Hermione shook her head softly, trying not to dislodge too many curls of hair, her entire stance more tense and poised than usual thanks to her desire to leave a positive impression upon others who were also at the party. The last thing she wanted to do was to provide any reason at all for people to regret giving her the opportunity to represent them on the island. "Actually, I'd have to agree with your assessment. Compared to the people I've known from school, or even adults I've known from the Ministry back in my world, the people here seem more engaged, on the whole. More attached to the population. I don't know if it's coincidence, if it's a culture that Tabula Rasa has formed over time, or if there's some greater significance as to who's brought here at all. Unfortunately, it's not something easy to figure out."

"Nothing about this place is easy to figure out," Kate said, but she was smiling as she said it. Even with the shit her mom had thrown at her for years, she'd gotten pretty good at letting go of things that she couldn't completely understand. Her mom was an exception, for the most part. She'd never been able to let go of that.

"But that's okay. That's your job now, not mine," she teased, her smile blossoming into a grin.

"True," Hermione nodded, chin raised loftily, rolling as best as she could with the joke. Hopefully no one thought her ego all that great in size; if anything, Hermione felt less certain about how well she'd perform at this job than she did as a student all those years in Hogwarts. She leaned in, eyes traveling left and right, tone affected and conspiratorial. "But if you happen to have any insight or ideas you want to pass on, I won't tell anyone else ( ... )
