"Hey, big winner! Congrats!"

Smiling, Rachel approached the blonde councilwoman, glad to have seen her name on the posted list. The other woman had a great heart and a pretty good head on her shoulders, and Rachel thought she'd done some good things in her last year. At least with what Rachel could see.

"Rachel!" Sookie exclaimed, smiling widely as she held her arms out for a hug; as much as she'd tried that evening to hold herself with grace and aplomb, the fact was that Sookie was a country girl first, a family girl before anything else, and it was hard to do anything but act her normal self around the friends she was so unquestionably grateful to have. Her cheeks were flushed a light pink with happiness and embarrassment alike. "Thank you, thank you- really though, I couldn't have done any of it without all of you, my friends, the people on this island... and there's nothin' anyone can do to argue against that, seeing as how it was the votes that got me here. So thank you."

"Hey, we were just lucky we had someone so great to vote for."

Rachel looked around, watching the crowd with a familiar feeling of loss and relief. As a telepath, she had a certain amount of hatred for large crowds. So many minds to sort through, so many chattering thoughts, awful things, beautiful things all of it pressing in. But at the same time there was the loss of that, the habits she'd developed that were useless here. All the power that used to be at her fingertips, gone.

"Where's your man, you're still with that guy, right?"

"Oh hush, you're just gonna give me the biggest ego ever," Sookie complained, cheeks a faint pink as she shook her head vehemently. Glad though she was that the island trusted her to continue serving on the Council, she also felt that she was far from the most technically qualified for the position, and that being modest was of utmost importance- the only way to keep herself and the work from stagnating.

Sookie scanned the crowd for Mitchell, and spotting him speaking with a fair few people, decided not to interrupt, her expression only growing more proud.

"But yeah, Mitchell. We're still going strong. I wish he'd made it onto the Council too, but hopefully a successful bid is better than nothing," she continued, her smile faint.

"Hey, I'm sure he made a good showing, and better luck next year, right?" Rachel actually felt a little guilty. Not really knowing Mitchell she hadn't voted for him, she preferred those she knew personally. Maybe it was a bit... nepotistic, it that was even the right word, but there just weren't a lot of people she trusted here yet.

"He definitely made a good showin'," Sookie agreed with a nod, her grin crooked, but warm and proud all at once. "Not that I know what the final count was, but his speech alone, it was so much more articulate than I'm used to him bein'. Sometimes, he seems like the sort of guy who just skirts along, y'know, like he just lays back and takes the world one day at a time. So to watch him come up with his own ideas about how to make the island better, and for him to see that people do actually trust him enough to nominate him for the elections, I think it'll just end up helping him here. Gives him more to do and keeps him motivated. So really, I couldn't be happier with that much."

"He's not the same at home, I guess?" She did a mental double-take and almost slapped her palm to her face. Wow, gossip much, Rachel?

"Sorry, that's not my business. But I'm glad it's working out for him."

"It's not that he isn't the same," Sookie considered, grinning. She didn't mind talking about Mitchell, in all honesty, and Rachel wasn't the type to pry further than necessary; Sookie could certainly understand feeling curious about the people her friends decided to date, and thus couldn't blame Rachel for nosing just a little. "It's that he... well, life wasn't easy for him back at home, so he has a tendency of really appreciatin' what he's got here, only sometimes that means he's content to eat, drink, and wander. I think it'd be better for him on the whole if he's got somethin' to work on."

"I don't know, Sookie, there's something to be said about just... enjoying life for awhile." Relishing in the idea that no one here was going to try and kill her or take her family away. Sure she missed everyone back home, but there was a peace here she'd missed. A feeling that she didn't have to look over her shoulder.

Her brother would probably disagree with that, but Rachel was honestly trying to enjoy things, even if she didn't succeed all that wall sometimes.

"You don't see me jumping into politics."

"No, I know, it's just..." Sookie exhaled slowly, pressing her lips together as she tapped her cheek. "I mean, I've been with Mitchell for, gosh, it's almost comin' up on a year now. And I just think that he's so much more alive when he actually has a goal. Doesn't matter if it's helpin' a friend or puttin' on a suit and heading to the office. I just think that havin' something like that probably helps center him."

Gathering her hair over a shoulder, Sookie nodded.

"But I'm not saying that jumping into politic's for everyone."

"My friend Kitty, back home, she loves a good argument. she'd probably be perfect for these things."

Not Rachel, she didn't have the aptitude, the patience, the goals. Why set goals when she didn't know if she'd be alive one year to the next? But she didn't begrudge the others.

"Can I ask - why did you decide to run again?"

"I've got a friend back home too," Sookie had to admit with a faint smile. "My best friend, actually. She'd be so great for this kind of job. I mean, her personality's a little rough, so it'd be hard for people to see at first, but she's always doin' things like arguing for civil rights, she actually understands how the law works, she cares. And boy, does she argue. Some of the most fired debates I've seen."

With a small sigh, Sookie shook the emotion out of her voice, grin widening. "And I guess, I don't know. I love the work. I mean, sometimes the paperwork gets frustratin' as all hell, but I love goin' to work and knowing that what we're doing makes things easier for people on this island. The atmosphere here, the people... it's all so much more positive than what I had back home. I miss Bon Temps, I do, but I want to work to preserve the peace here as much as I can. If I wasn't reelected, I would have gone to volunteer more at the Children's Office, the kitchen, all of that."

Rachel fought the sudden wave of homesickness, Sookie's friend sounded a lot like Kitty and she missed having Kitty's enthusiasm to keep her steady. Her and Kurt, both, keeping her sane.

She really needed to go home when everything with the Shi'ar was done.

"Better you, then me, I'm not really patient with all those things. My idea of keeping the peace back home generally involves beating up the bad guys until they surrender or go back home."
