Casino Night!

Jun 18, 2011 14:05

When I'd first come up with the idea of Casino Night, I wasn't sure if it was even possible on the island. In retrospect, that might have been naive of me, because if there was anything I'd learned in over four years on Tabula Rasa, it was that its residents were capable of doing just about anything save getting home ( Read more... )

O-Ren feels a little strange with her hair cut short, the back of her neck exposed and bare. She can feel the breeze whenever someone walks behind her, and it's hard not to turn around to stare. Instead, she stands and watches the giant wheel go around. She'll go and play mah-jong in a little while, but for now it's about watching roulette

She doesn't exactly smile, but there a light in her eyes and a softness to her mouth that suggests she's feeling a little better tonight.

It's not easy wearing five inch heels, Claire thinks to herself as she walks around in a cute little black dress and matching pumps, wondering if she's a little overdressed for the venue. Sure, it's nice to get an excuse to play with black tie for once, but there's something in the back of Claire's mind that tells her she'd be a lot more comfortable in a flowing cotton dress and flats.

Especially when said heels have her bumping into strangers. "Oh god," Claire says with a cringe, glad that she doesn't seem to have spilled anything. "Sorry. My feet are literally taking me places today."

"It's okay," O-Ren says, eyes widening. The other girl is-- beautiful, really, and suddenly she feels extremely underdressed, even though she spent a careful hour with a fashion magazine to put her outfit together. "I would stumble in those shoes too."

Not true, really, but O-Ren is practicing.

"Which just means that you are a much smarter person than myself, not biting off more than you can chew," Claire concludes, before wrinkling her nose. "Or not... walking further than your feet can take you? Something like that." She grins, easy and relaxed for once. There's a lot going on her life that she needs to address, difficulties and problems to solv, but as things are right now, right this evening, nothing's out of the ordinary. And she can't help but feel grateful for that.

"I've definitely seen you around," she adds quietly, contemplative. "You used to have longer hair, right? I like the new look. I'm Claire, by the way."

"I cut it about half an hour ago," O-Ren answers, reaching up to touch the ends as if she doesn't quite remember the feel. "I just-- needed to cut it. I'm not sure why."

"I'm O-Ren," she says then, and is caught between the different courtesies. "I've seen you around too." Finally, she holds out a hand, though she's not sure teenage girls do this.

"Sometimes I get the urge to cut my hair, too," Claire admits with a nod, trying to look past the seeming shyness of the other girl, her own voice brighter as though to compensate. "Usually after something major happens, or if I just don't like the way things are going and want a change. But I've never been brave enough to do it. My dad likes my hair so much, and I like it most days, too, so I guess I was worried about having to wait forever to grow it back."

Grinning, she takes the offer hand and gives it a steady, but gentle shake.

"Maybe you just wanted something new in your life. Either way, really, it looks amazing."
