they say it's your birthday; well, happy birthday to you

To be honest, I'm not even sure what the big deal is about turning eighteen. What's so different about that one-eight that makes people think you're officially qualified to be an adult, more so than you were yesterday? I've got two more years left of being a teenager, so it's not that. I mean, it just seems like a completely arbitrary number ( Read more... )

"Hello, camera," Francis replies gamely, giving the machine a goodnatured wave before smiling at the girl behind the lens. "And hello to you, too. Have you tried any of the food yet, or are you just filming it?"

Claire laughs, pleased that someone's playing along, even if it means word for word, before she lowers the camera slightly with a smile- the young man standing in front of her isn't someone she's met before, and that takes a little precedence over filming food and decorations. "Oh, the camera loves you," she informs him, lips slightly pursed for effect, before she dissolves into giggles. "But hey! I, ah... well, let's just say that I was hoping that filming the food would require my standing outside of its immediate radius. Lessens the temptation."

With a helpless grin, she raises the camera a touch again. "I'd shake your hand, but I'm pretty sure that would jar my already shaky camera skills. But I'm Claire."

"Francis Abernathy," he replies. "And you may very well have the right idea--I thought I was going to be the only one who came bearing refreshments." Smirking, he gestures sweepingly at the food-laden table. "I was gravely mistaken."

"Francis Abernathy," Claire repeats after him, her expression molding into one of slight surprise at the sound of the name. Sounds swanky, upper class, the sort of name that you just can't help but apply a British accent to- that's how posh it sounds. With a mischievous grin, she continues capturing the guy on film, enjoying the way that the sun shines down on his fiery hair. "Well, Francis, when you think about it... we've got a bakery set up on this island. A bakery. For a couple hundred people. We've set up a bakery before we have a series of phones. You can see where our island priorities are, so food is always going to be a big presence at get-togethers."

"Well, when you put it that way..." Francis trails off with a soft laugh, allowing the younger woman her point. "A bakery is much better than a telephone, anyway. I can think of a fair few people back home I could do without hearing from."

He turns back to the table, filling a small plate with food before speaking again. "Have you captured anything else interesting with that camera?"

It's a good question, one that makes Claire press her lips tightly together. What has she captured on camera? A kiss. Eden, bustling around the hut and in her normal routine. Her own leap from the Compound. They're all interesting, Claire knows, otherwise she wouldn't have pressed record in the first place.

The corner of her mouth quirks.

"I caught a girl... trying to fly," she offers lightly, tilting her head. It's getting easier to let that fade away into the past.

"Did you?" Francis had heard about it a few months back, in vague snatches of overheard conversation--some girl jumping from the compound roof, evoking in him the memory of the histrionic rash of suicide attempts that swept Hampden after Bunny's death. "Do you think she'll succeed?"

Her expression continues to fade into a distant neutrality, like all spark has been stifled in the absence of air. Pressing her lips firmly together, it's difficult for Claire not to just come out with the truth- that she's talking about herself, and that she was the foolish girl who leaped off of the Compound roof and to what could have turned out a lot worse than it did. But going on too much about a grave injury doesn't seem to be any way to make a friend.

"I don't think so," she admits finally. "I don't think she really can, here. We're all kind of just fish out of water. We shouldn't be trying for too much yet."
