It was only fitting, Jane believed, that she would hold this party upon such an eventful day. Five years ago, she had arrived upon the island and her whole life had changed. She was no longer the young girl that she had once been and was no longer trapped in the confines of a time when her options were greatly limited. Though the date coincided, ( Read more... )

Before there was Hogwarts, Hermione loved books. Textbooks, compilations of plays, novels- it didn't matter what form they came in, Hermione made time to read them all, absorbing every single word and expanding both knowledge and imagination with every turn of a page. She likes a day of well-mannered frivolity on most days, but what makes the Bennet Ball especially magical is the fact that it's being hosted by none other than Jane Bennet, one of Hermione's favorite fictional characters (although on the island, she's anything but, real and tangible at last). It was never really a question whether or not Hermione would attend, although she spent a grueling few hours searching through the clothes box before finally finding a dress to her liking, eggshell in color and with both ruffles and lace. It's a dress fit for a princess, and that's how Hermione aims to feel tonight, indulging her childhood dreams and whimsy ( ... )

It still hasn't passed, the delight that Grace feels over the fact that Hermione, Ron, Harry and so many other characters from the Harry Potter books are real and tangible people on the island. She supposes, that for those who have been there a long while, it's more a part of everyday life than anything else, but she hasn't quite reached that point yet.

Still, despite the fact that she finds herself feeling a bit starstruck whenever she happens to speak with any of them, she has only the brightest of grins to offer Hermione that evening.

"Oh, it was mostly Jane. She deserves all of the credit," Grace says, because she's really only helped out with odds and ends, stepped in whenever Jane might have felt the need to rest. It's remarkable, really, how much she's able to do in her current condition. "And I absolutely love your dress, by the way."

Whenever Hermione finds that she's able to regularly converse with other girls on the island, there's a surge of gratitude that she feels, although she's never sure quite where it ought be directed. All she knows is that for many years, she didn't have many female friends to converse with, most of their interests seeming too frivolous for Hermione's tastes, or Hermione's propensity for lingering in the library halls far too stifling for theirs. Here, she seems to have no trouble at all, able to sit back and talk about dresses at will, but just as capable of turning around and spending an evening working on Council affairs and learning for her classes. It's the best combination of it all, and while there are many days when Hermione tries her best to consider the matter of leaving, that doesn't mean that she's incapable of enjoying the island for what it is as well, whenever she puts her mind to it ( ... )

"I don't think I've ever thought of reading to it," Grace replies, though she certainly isn't judging Hermione for having done so; it's so very like her, or at least, from what Hermione's read in the countless times she's gone through the books. And after all, she certainly has more experience with magical things than Grace does- and if the clothes box and bookshelf aren't a bit magic, Grace isn't sure what is.

"I suppose it just wants people to be nice to it, like anyone else."

"Oh, I don't exactly read to it," Hermione laughs lightly, shaking her head, although in retrospect, she supposes that most people would probably assume that she was doing as such, perched often by the box and reading line after endless line out of a stack of textbooks resting by the washer. "It's more that I read aloud sometimes, when I think that it'd help me better processe information. Usually, it slows the reading down too much to be sustainable, but especially with lists, I've found that it's often helpful to recite them repeatedly, until one can manage from memory, and-"

She pauses, suddenly looking sheepish. "...sorry, that was probably far more than you ever wanted to hear on the topic of memorization. It's not even that interesting, I've just been a bit, erm, buried in work lately."
