Normally, Danny doesn't willingly go into the water.

There's riptide and there's the fear of drowning and there are sharks (Jaws left a very heavy imprint in Danny's mind when he was a kid and that's not something you get away from so easily). He knows all those things, but when Danny wakes up that morning and destroys a hefty amount of property ( Read more... )

There are shadows painted under Hermione's eyes this early in the morning, cast by a sun not yet risen to full height and softened by fatigue. It's been a few weeks since she's gotten decent sleep, and yet Hermione continues to push forward as strongly as ever, growing accustomed to a lack of rest and finding it alarmingly simple to keep her mind awake and alert. As it was back home, so it is here- the best way to keep her wits sharpened was to steep her life in fear. Sirius' return had, somehow, only exacerbated that with time. Opening up new possibilities that Hermione had never before imagined, of waves and rocks far out to sea, of people leaving ( ... )

"Believe me," Hermione reassures, slipping her hands into her pockets and picking herself up to head towards the site of the disaster. "I'm not really the type of personality that lends naturally towards heroism. I'm much more content simply offering the support- being the back-up, as it were."

"You and me, we're gonna get along," Danny says in a self-assured and pleased way, following along and having to take longer strides just to catch up. "So what'd you do back home?" he asks, even though he knows. There's no way his half-British kid wouldn't be reading the stories and hell, he'd been figuring out what the hell to do about the owl situation for when she turned eleven.

"I was a student until recently," Hermione decides to reply- he seems to be asking her about her profession, after all, rather than what she is, and that much is accurate enough. Whether she'd been born witch or muggle, school was always going to be an important part of her life, and she does miss it a great deal, more than looking forward to the busy schedule that the island should bring around for her again. "But I had to stop about a year ago now, for various reasons. I've been meaning to return to my studies, but it's a bit difficult when my institution doesn't exist, here. Taking some classes at one's leisure isn't the same as getting a full education."

"It's definitely a little carefree," Danny admits, because he pretty much decided on the academy from the word 'go', but it still had a kind of structure that's lacking, here. "Though, I hear they've got programs for you if you want to be a doctor? And me, I'm trying to look into something for law enforcement, but...I mean, that's all I got."

"I've been giving it a great deal of thought, admittedly, the way that the school runs here and whether or not there might be a more structured way of providing education for those who are... seeking, in a manner of speaking, degrees. Or the ability to begin a practice," Hermione considers as they walk, her breath leaving her lips in a quaver. "I don't know how feasible it is, but I do know that the rather ad hoc process right now isn't ideal. Of course, circumstances on the island altogether aren't ideal, but there should never be a time when we settle ourselves with anything less than the most we can get."

Danny shares a fond smile with Hermione, trying to suppress it as they walk. "You know, this? This right here? These are reasons why I voted for you," he confesses to her. He doesn't want to do anything but give her a little nudge on the shoulder, a pat on the back, to say that he appreciates what she does. "I'm with you. You need my help? Say the word, I'm in."
