As if it wasn't bad enough that Snape was here, surrounded by terrible people and terrible roommates and terrible reminders of all that he'd left behind

She'd tried just about every trigger there was in the book. Calling forth every possible emotion, exercising both the sharpest of focus and keeping herself distant alike, all in the hopes of clearing up whether or not she'd been gifted with an ability that weekend. In all honesty, Hermione didn't care much one way or the other, if the ability wasn't useful to her, or if it wasn't the magic that she so longed to experience again. But most of all, Hermione simply wanted to avoid an unpleasant surprise, the chance that an ability could crop up when she least expected and could least afford for it to.
After several hours, however, she was running out of ideas, and decided that the best option was to remain in the Compound, where there were plenty of learned people and resources that could keep most, if not all, potential abilities under control. Deciding that the rec room wasn't too poor of a choice for an afternoon spent, Hermione wandered inside, only to blink as a good portion of it seemed to... jiggle"Oh my god," Hermione blinked,

Snape heard a girl exclaim as she walked into the room, and he sighed. For now, his great piles of jelly were the most abnormal thing about the room, and he assumed she was commenting on them.
"Yes, they are great piles of jelly; no, you probably should not eat them," he said, his tone sounding utterly bored as he turned to the next page in his book.
Staring between the aptly described 'great piles of jelly' and the man seated primly in his chair, a book open in his hands, Hermione mentally tried to piece the puzzle together. Since jelly had not decided to suddenly make an appearance much of anywhere else in the Compound, as far as she'd seen, the likelihood that this man was somehow involved was decently high, enough to draw suspicion. But one look at his demeanor, and she couldn't imagine that he would have purposely created any of it. Perhaps his was a power (if indeed, there was such a thing as a power which turned objects to jelly) that he couldn't control, nor wanted, and he had only managed to contain it by remaining in that room for the duration of the island's madness

Snape sighed and then closed his book, setting it on his lap and folding his hands overtop of it. The girl seemed to be made of questions, and he was already irritated.
"I tried changing it back," he said, "but the... ability only seems to go one way." He shrugged, as if he didn't care much one way or the other whether or not things eventually turned to their correct, more solid states.
It wasn't hard to see that the young man was already growing irritated, potentially at Hermione's interference, potentially at his newfound ability. Were Hermione in his situation, she was sure that neither would be particularly welcome, although of course with such a phenomenon sweeping over the entirety of the island, she also couldn't put the comfort of one man above the safety of others. (Not that turning the bookshelf into jelly was really all that much of a concern, but in her mind, Hermione already wondered whether or not the ability extended to living creatures, even people

Words, words, so many words. She reminded him of the worst of the insufferable know-it-alls of Hogwarts, the kinds of students he already was tempted to dock points from, even just in his first few months of teaching.
"So you seek to find a means to control it, then, do you?" he asked, one eyebrow arching. "In case anyone happens upon a power that doesn't meet popular approval?"
