Penny yawns and scrubs a hand over her face, sighing as she frowns down at her textbook. It's still fairly early in the evening, but it had been a long day, starting with her waking up at three for her shift at the bakery, then keeping busy with homework and class for the rest of the afternoon. The notes she's taking now on her reading, while not ( Read more... )

"Wow," Claire remarks, walking through the rec room just in time to catch the end of a sentence, one where the average number of syllables in each word is far higher than Claire's accustomed to dealing with. For all that she loves science and finds it to be the most fascinating field there is to explore, it's also one that overwhelms her at best. There's a reason why she got a C in biology, before she really started putting forth the effort. And even now, with that extra studying on her end, she still doesn't trust herself to really pull completely up to speed.

"With people like you in the class, it's really no wonder I keep considering dropping all but dance and art courses," she laughs, hefting a biology text in her own arms and seating herself down on a sofa.

Penny laughs as she looks up at Claire, shaking her head a little. "Isn't it amazing how saying big words can make you sound smarter? I'm just reading from the textbook, though." Penny wasn't a bad at it and she worked hard, but she knew the chances of her ever being a start student were slim.

She sets her pen down and takes a sip of tea, looking at the book the other girl carried with interest. "What're you working on?"

"Only if you're someone who's actually capable of managing so many syllables at once," Claire points out with a grin, before plopping her own book down on the armrest and trying to let it balance on the curved surface. "Some people just end up totally tripping over the words, and that just takes you three steps back, in my opinion. I'll be over here, learning about cells and proteins and stuff that we generally hear and use in everyday conversation."

With a small laugh, she shakes her head. "Which is... basically my way of saying that I'm only on basic biology. Trying to work on my foundations before I head into any of the advanced courses."

She rests her mug on her knee, absent-mindedly running her thumb along the lip of it. "That makes sense," she says, nodding along to Claire's reasoning. "I'm doing the same thing. This is just intro to psychology. I probably should have taken some maths or other sciences too, but..." She laughs and shrugs, tucking her hair behind her ear. "I figured I could put that off a little longer."

"Iii don't know," Claire hems, tilting her head back and forth as she considers Penny's statement. "I mean, granted, I am definitely not the end-all be-all authority when it comes to academia, but sometimes I feel like with all of the technology that's been made available, things like math are a little less crucial for us to learn that closely. But don't tell Peter Parker I said that, because he's a bit more like an uncle to me than a teacher, and somehow that makes me doubly concerned about ever letting him down. And he really likes his math and science."
