Danny is fairly sure that even though he put Kate in holding for destruction of property a couple weeks ago, he should be allowed one free pass -- just the one. He's been looking for clothes in order to replace the ones of Steve's that didn't make it through the fire (that Danny set) and for the most part he's picking out the things Steve likes and ( Read more... )

It used to be that Hermione Granger didn't need to turn to the clothes box very often at all, being more than diligent enough to do the laundry for the boys on a regular basis, even folding them as she looked over her Council records in the evening, making sure that everything was in place. But ever since the school term began, time for chores grew shorter and shorter, and when given the option of simply turning to the box for a clean set of clothing, Hermione found herself giving in more frequently.

And on such occasions, it really wasn't unusual to find someone cursing the box for the sparse offerings it made.

"Vandalism charges?" she asks, hearing the familiar voice, brow furrowed. "On the island? Is that really becoming such a problem?" She kneels down, rifling through the box now that Danny seems done with it, only to unearth a shirt not unlike those he has in hand.

She tilts her head at it, contemplative. "How...?"

Danny has resorted to tiredly pinching the bridge of his nose. When Hermione joins in and finds her own horrors at the end of the yellow-brick-box, he can only gesture to the heavens as if a prophecy has come to light. "You see?" he says, knocking it down a couple notches so that he doesn't completely seem like a raving lunatic. "You see what I mean? And no, there's no rash of vandalism charges, but I had one the other week. One is just the start of a problem," he says.

"Wait, why does yours make no sense?" he asks, confused. It's pretty hard to confuse his, but there's a lot of big words on...and yeah, Danny's just realized where they're from. Rachel used to read Grace the books, what with the appropriate accent and everything.

"Ah, you mean- I'd heard of that," Hermione says sheepishly, though she does her best to avoid any direct mention of Kate, feeling that the matter is already solidly behind the other girl, and seeing very little to gain from bringing it up again and mucking through all the dirt. She does sigh a little sigh of relief upon realizing that Danny's only referring to Kate, and not some other outbreak which may stand a chance of causing a widespread problem. (Not least of all, she thinks about that young man she met some time ago, who spent all of his free time prank calling the IPD.) "Pardon me for saying, though, I don't think that you'll be seeing a problem from her again anytime soon, it isn't like her ( ... )

Danny wants to apologize for asking when he knows, but then he'd have to apologize for knowing and then it just gets too complicated for him to deal with (especially when he's already a little bit at his patience's end). "I definitely trust that the vandal won't be doing it again," Danny reassures and if she does, they're definitely going to have very strong words. He glances at the t-shirt and takes a deep breath, shaking his head. "It's possibly the worst way to announce nuptials. Let's just say that."

"Not something that your partner would appreciate, I'm assuming? Or is it something that you'd simply rather not announce?" Hermione asks, her eyes narrowing in curiosity, knowing full well that it's a bit unfair of her to ask while he's clearly showing some level of hesitation. (Then again, there's clearly a problem with the situation at hand, and the only way Hermione knows of to solve that is to hash everything out in full.) "Either way, I suppose... you could either turn the shirt inside-out, or you could head on over to the Boutique. I'm sure that they'd be especially welcoming of people who are already doing the island a regular service."

"No, I mean, it's not that I don't think we should announce." Though, that does bring up the worry that Danny's doing this all wrong. Last time, he let Rachel do it and now he's stuck wondering if he's screwing it all up. "Shit, should I be making an announcement about this? Do people expect that? Would you want one?"

"For a wedding? Well, of course, I'd personally be in favor of and would, yes, more greatly expect for there to be some kind of announcement made than not. After all, it's the sort of thing that people appreciate knowing, that you're starting a family, that you've made the next step in your relationship. It doesn't necessarily have to be anything extravagant, but I imagine that it'd be better than surprising people without any prior warning," Hermione reasons, even as her mind startes kicking into overdrive at once, thinking about all of the reasons that she's been hesitant to embark on that last, official step with Ron, going on their first date. "Then again, you know how much I appreciate being given details and figures in advance."

Danny pinches the bridge of his nose slightly, giving Hermione a rueful look. "See, now, why didn't I just elope, that's the question." He knows it's not what he wants, though, which means that he's going to have to just knuckle down and put the plans together. "Why are we -- why are we talking about my stupid issues, huh? That's what I want to know. How are you? How's your life? What's new?"

"Because eloping comes with its own set of problems," Hermione points out with a slight grin, crooked, as she stands to her feet and hops onto one of the nearby laundry machines, crossing one ankle over the other. "Namely, if you've friends and family who would be eager to attend the wedding, they'd surely give you a great amount of trouble once you returned, possibly more than they would over the course of planning a wedding."

Leaning until her back presses lightly against the wall, Hermione hooks the shirt over her knee. What it reads shouldn't matter. The choice in colors shouldn't matter. Yet, it still feels like something she can't simply throw back into the box, for all that it alludes to home.

"As for my life... there isn't very much that's new, to be honest. A lot of paperwork, a lot of classes. No time for major revelations of this sort," she jokes, tilting her head.

"Hey, don't knock the minor revelations," Danny insists with a big grin on his face. After all, it's the small ones that got him to where he is today. If not for Steve saying 'I know you' like they were three other (more important) words, if it hadn't been for a wire-tap he requested once upon a time, he would never have found the family he had in Five-0. Minor revelations have made his life what it is today. "What are you taking, anyway? Class-wise," he prods.

"A great deal of classes, actually. So many that I find myself actively having... to work quite hard, in fact, to keep up with all of them," Hermione smiles, tilting her head in a moment of modesty, the admission that she's starting to feel the weight of a challenge. It's the best way to live, as far as she's concerned, always having to reach further, stretching one's abilities to the fullest. She likes it that way, but there's no doubt that putting so much time towards school means, inevitably, less time that she can spend elsewhere, with her friends, with people from home. The sacrifice and trade-offs aren't always easy to cought up ( ... )

Danny blinks in slight surprise at the laundry list of courses that she's handing to him. He opens his mouth, closes it, and tries to put it together. "So, you're trying to be -- what, mad genius?" he guesses. "Chemistry major? I mean, if you want to talk science, I got a science guy I'm living with. He gets off on taking fingerprints using nothing more than a duster's feather and the remnants of yesterday's vacuuming," Danny says, jutting a thumb over his shoulder as if to gesture to Steve's general person.

"Mostly, I'm trying to get a feel for all the courses that weren't really offered in my regular schooling," Hermione replied, shaking her head, though she couldn't help the bright smile which stretched across her face at the implied praise. The number of courses that one took upon themselves didn't say everything, of course- she was pretty sure that there were a few people on the island who were taking even more classes than she was, but unless they succeeded at each, it didn't mean terribly much- but Hermione hoped that it still spoke of her motivation, her desire to learn more, and how much she loathed the idea of ever being uninformed while in a position of such authority.

"Science and maths were a bit lacking at my school. I did my best to keep up on the side, but it's much easier to have a ready and willing instructor to show the way," she elaborated with a light nod.

"I was bad at both those. I mean, I got by, don't get me wrong," he insists as he lifts a hand to the air, like he's swearing all this to an invisible judge, "But it wasn't like I was sitting there after school eagerly because I wanted to know more. I love English, I love law, I love procedure. I mean, and once I got to be a cop, I loved that. Then I got to be a Dad and I figured out what I loved more than anything in the world," he says, giving a haphazard shrug, like it's no big deal.

"You're a father," she repeats, eyes widening with the realization. It isn't that the thought of Danny having a child is surprise- given his age, it isn't unexpected in the least. Hermione hopes, herself, to have kids by that age, to have someone she can pour her efforts towards keeping happy and raising. But any talk of parenthood these days still brings her thoughts back to her parents; she presses her lips together, trying not to let the thought show, though it's a thin effort at best. With a small smile, but one slightly apprehensive, she asks, "Is your child here on the island?"

"I'm a father," he confirmed and his smile is anything but happy. It's habit. It's habit to smile because it's all he's got. He's got memories and he's got a desire to be a father again, but he doesn't have Grace. "And no, she's not here. She was eight when I left, but she'd be nine by now," he says, his tone edging towards wrecked the longer he speaks. "She's my life. I mean, everything I did, I did it for her, and she's not here."
