"Hey, hey," Kurt spoke up, his tone almost accusing as he readily slid into view, the glass of wine resting neatly in his fingers having offered more than a sip of courage to fuel him for the night. "I understand that the goal of black tie was to make everyone here arrive looking fabulous, but boy, you couldn't have left some of the spotlight for the rest of us, could you?"

While mostly teasing, there was no doubt in Kurt's mind that the outfit Cissie had put together looked absolutely stunning, helped by the dim lighting of the Hub, the gold glittering and sparkling against the deep colors most people wore. "Seriously," he added, a furrow in his brow. "I've been trying my best to mingle with the rest of the crowd, but I find myself drawn back to you every time, and it's just not fair."

Cissie ducked her head, her earrings tinkling minutely. "Oh, thank you! All I can say is that I'm still kind of surprised the clothes box was so nice to me! I mean, I was hoping I could talk it into something nice but I didn't expect to get this."

She took a moment to appreciate Kurt's outfit and grinned. "You look amazing yourself, I have to say. Having a good birthday yet?"

"It's a better turnout than I expected," Kurt admitted first, eyes twinkling with barely suppressed glee as he turned to face Cissie, his smile wavering only for all the effort that Kurt was placing into trying to suppress it. "Not that I've never had a birthday party before, and I'm sure that Santana's probably had better with all of her Cheerios friends from home, but I haven't even been on the island for all that long, so..." His smile widened at last, almost painful as he bobbed his head eagerly.

"I don't know, maybe it's just being used as a chance for everyone to dress up, but this is exactly the kind of theme I always wanted to have for a party, and while I certainly miss my friends from home, I'm pretty sure that this is as good as it gets on the island. I'm not about to complain."

"I'm glad you're happy," Cissie said, affectionately nudging him with her hip. "Because I'd have to do something about it if you weren't and I'm telling you, it could have gotten very crazy. Bart might've had to hold me back."

Okay, so Bart would probably have just joined in the merriment but that was totally besides the point. If Kurt needed her to liven up the place or cause a diversion or something, she would because that was the sort of things you did for friends.

"You know, not to sound like a total creep or anything, and I might not have noticed were I not keeping my eyes extra sharp tonight to make sure that everything goes over fine at this party, but I totally noticed you and Bart earlier being kind of... close," Kurt teased goodnaturedly. Even if he knew that Cissie and Bart hadn't done anything even approaching distasteful, and were quite honestly less PDA-prone than most of the couples that he'd known at McKinley, Cissie was still a girl that Kurt found fun to joke around with, exaggerate a little, all in the interest of a fun conversation.

"How long has that been happening? Because it's funny, sometimes it's like the two of you practically finish each other's thoughts or something. Totally cute."

Despite herself Cissie blushed, a silly grin appearing on her face. "Um, well, if you mean how long we've been together, since my birthday. We've actually known each other for a lot longer than that. He was my first real friend which I'm not sure is neat or a little sad."

"But hey, he has to be close, seeing as he's my bodyguard and all," she added with a wink. "He's very good at it, too."

"Neat," Kurt decides with a solid nod, doing his best to help her shake aside whatever other reservations she might have. The idea of two friends, long-time friends, coming together in a relationship almost exactly fits Kurt's idea of a perfect romance, and the amount of pleasure that he derives at the mere thought of it shows in his eyes, glancing from her to her boyfriend, then back again. "I'm definitely going to vote for neat. I mean, it looks the two of you have it all worked out, balancing friendship and more. I am, admittedly, quite jealous, but also more than happy to know that it's at least possible."

His lips quirked. "Hopefully he'll be able to protect you from the water balloons that I'm already anticipating will end up flinging in the wrong direction once or twice over the course of the party."

"I like to think so," Cissie said fondly, glancing over at Bart for a moment. "I mean, we talked a lot about it first before making it official or anything and we're just kind of seeing how things go. He's one of my best friends in the world and I kind of having to thank the island, you know? If it hadn't brought us here, we probably would never have ended up together."

On her side of the timeline, Bart was still in the Impulse stage and dating him - assuming he could even focus his attention long enough for that - would be like dating her brother. On his side, it had been years since Young Justice had been together and disbanded. Who knew what she was like then or if she would even be interested.

"And hey, if I get soaked, I'll just have to make sure he gets soaked too. It's good to share things with your boyfriend, right?"

He felt his heart continue to swell with something like envy, though Kurt decided not to indulge himself for much longer; there simply didn't seem to be a point. Already, he was leagues more fortunate on the island than he'd ever been back home, aside from being cut off from direct access to his dreams, and overall, he wasn't one who liked to complain. He'd done far too much of it in his life for his taste, trying to get people to be more understanding of who he was on the whole.

"I imagine so," he answered at last with a smile. "But I'd have to take your word for it, not having any experience in the area."
