"This look," Kurt announces as soon as he's within hearing distance, waving an index finger in Scripps' direction. "This look, it needs to be your look, and it needs to be your look more often. Not that I don't appreciate wearing something more suited to everyday comfort, but really, this look is so good on you that I'm a little disappointed that I didn't manage to wrangle a polaroid camera or two to capture the moment."

He's had a couple of drinks, a flute of champagne and a glass of red wine, if memory serves, and both have combined to give Kurt a pleasant buzz as he weaves through the crowd, stopping at all familiar faces, and even around a few less familiar.

"Having a good time?" Kurt asks hopefully, lips turned in a smile as he comes to a rest right next to Scripps.

Scripps tugs at his suspenders as he wears a rueful smile like a fedora, slightly dismayed that he hasn't worn such a thing -- but it would mess with the hair and a look is a look. "I'm having a wondrous go of it," he admits with a bright smile on his face. "But I'm not the one who matters, am I? I, who stand as only a guest in the company of the one meant to be celebrated."

"Oh, but we all know that the true way to celebrate a life is to also celebrate all the people who've played a positive role in it," Kurt replies in turn, raising a brow in slight challenge. "Besides which, as a host, it's still my responsibility to make sure everyone's having a good time. Doubly so since it's... not exactly Santana's cup of tea, looking after the welfare of others, so I'm pulling double duty tonight."

Sighing, he leans against the bar, giving the festivities another once-over. "I do wish that it would've been feasible to get a piano up in here, but, sadly, it would have posed more danger and risk to the piano than would've been worth it for a single party," he shrugs, pursing his lips in a wistful expression.

"Then I think maybe my gift to you will have to be a song," Scripps deduces as he thinks about what he can offer. He'd come empty-handed, which is terribly rude and gauche, but what does one purchase on a deserted island with not a cent in your name? He's so new that he hasn't even accumulated any goodwill and so all he's got are the notes to a melody or four. "I hope you're not overextending yourself playing double the host. I've not met Santana, but I'm sure she's got two hands and a mouth, same as you. Though, I haven't heard her sing, so maybe your dulcet tones do improve upon the hosting, in general."

There's only one detail that Kurt needs to focus on, but still, finding himself in the mode of needing to get everything right, needing to make sure every detail's in place, he makes sure to address the rest of Scripps' points first, before he's inevitably lost to the thought of his voice, of getting to hear it at this age, at point blank. Blinking, he shakes his head, just a minute amount. "Santana's... a very specific kind of hostess, I suppose you could say," he admits with a nod. "But either way, this party is pretty low-key for all the people we invited, don't let appearances deceive you. I totally have the time for a song. Really. All ears."

Waving his hand in Santana's direction, he keeps his gaze focused on Scripps. "Santana's got a pretty great voice too, I have to admit, but it's her appreciation for good music that I personally find a little lacking."

"Maybe I'll ruminate on it," Scripps says thoughtfully, "and when you least expect it, there it will be." He tries to seek out Santana in the direction of the handwave, but does have a moment of trouble in locating her. "Which one?" he asks, finally. "I'm still new, remember, you must take pity on me, lest I become confused and bamboozled."

"I'm still new as well," Kurt pointed out with a cheeky grin, arching a brow. "After all, when you found me in the rec room those several weeks back, that was only my third day on the island. But it's okay, I hear you- this is supposed to be a party that I'm helping to host, or cohosting, yet I feel like there are at least half a dozen people here I don't recognize in the slightest. Here."

He pointed again, more carefully, in Santana's direction. "See that girl over there with the red dress, black bust? Dark, dark hair that falls over her shoulders like molten chocolate? That'd be Santana. And... the first piece of advice that I'd give to you about her is to mind her ego. She's rather sensitive about a lot of things, but the problem is that she responds with quite a temper. Best to avoid setting her off."

Scripps peers through the room and the first thing that comes to mind is: Dakin. Whether a similarity or simply the thought that his friend would greatly admire the scenery, it doesn't matter. It's the first thing he thinks of. "Well, then, what do you say to staying in safe waters for the time being?" he suggests. "And I'll continue to talk to you?"

"I... can't say that I'd mind," Kurt replies honestly, feeling a bit pleased with himself, both shoulders raising in a coy shrug before he brushes his fingers against his chin again in thought. "She's not a bad person or anything though, I feel that I should make that much clear, at least. If anything, sometimes I wonder if she's a great deal more insecure than any of us might see or suspect, but. That could be me reading too much into things. She used to be a bit unkind to me, but now we're... as close friends as I imagine we could ever be. Though, I'll be honest with you."

He turns with a slight grin. "I'm halfway certain that she invited me to host a joint birthday party with her because she knew I'd get the place fixed up in style."

"Is that really such a bad thing?" he wonders aloud. After all, to be the epitome of someone who can set styles and make a place go from drab to dreamy isn't something that Scripps would be so quick to ignore. "Well, and I like what you've done with the place. For what it's worth."
