"Oh, this is balls," Kate said, as she tipped her head back to look at the mistletoe hanging above her.
In the two weeks since everything had changed, she'd avoided it pretty well, especially since everyone else was getting stuck all over the place. That morning, she'd put on something other than a puffy dress -- yeah, she complained about them, but they really were pretty awesome -- and in her long jacket and tall boots, she'd gone out with the intention of exploring the shit out of this city. Maybe even getting a few Christmas presents, because she wasn't going to waste the opportunity to actually shop in a real store for the first time in forever.
Except now she was stuck. Somewhere near Buckingham Palace, she was standing in an alley and she couldn't go anywhere, which basically meant she was going to be here until someone could find Harry. Or until one of her friends took pity on her. The idea of possibly being stuck there for hours made her uncomfortable, not only because it was cold, even with the hat and scarf she'd found, but because of what the other Kate had told her about the serial killer guy. That sort of shit was something she normally would have shrugged off, especially since she'd told Danny and Jeff about him, but now, standing alone in an alley, she wasn't completely convinced that it was safe.
"Total balls," she repeated with a sigh, then leaned against the brick wall behind her. It was getting dark, too, as the sun dipped behind the buildings and she shivered inside her jacket. The people who passed by on the street a few feet away barely glanced in her direction, and she knew that calling to them wouldn't help. They were barely people at all, which was creepy enough in itself.
From deeper in the alley there was a sound of shuffling feet and Kate turned and watched someone walk out of the shadows and pass her by, stumbling into the street. She shivered again and wrapped her arms around herself. She wasn't scared. All she had to do was convince herself of that fact until someone came along.
Hopefully the person coming along wouldn't want to play with her guts.
