First some thinking about schedule. As I said earlier, I'll be away from tomorrow morning until Monday afternoon. I looks like everyone wants an update before I go, and nearly everyone is happy with a double-speed game. The timing I have in mind is:
Today: (I present) lines from the 1st book, name of the 2nd book
Monday 10th: scores from the 1st book, lines from the 2nd book, name of the 3rd book
Wednesday 12th: scores from the 2nd book, lines from the 3rd book, name of the 4th book
Friday 14th: scores from the 3rd book, lines from the 4th book, name of the 5th book
Tuesday 18th: scores from the 4th book, lines from the 5th book.
Thursday 20th: scores from the 5th book.
Friday 21st: I go home for the holidays :)
So there's at least two working days between each section. Are there any of these periods that is going to cause anyone any hassle? I can always try and get a round done from home, or indeed cut it down to four books if necessary.
- As the rays of the hot sun crept over the land, they blazed over the cracked faces of the prisoners, gasping for drink.
- Brendan Doyle had heard that the Stargate was capable of facilitating time travel, but he never throught he'd be one of the lucky few to make use of that quirk.
- Brendan Doyle had never been to London.
- Brendan Doyle loved the smell of used bookstores.
- Brendan Doyle was getting a headache.
- Doyle's head snapped up at the sound.
- It looked for all the world like a simple box, inlaid with lapis and carnelian scarabs, inscribed with hieroglyphs.
- It was a boring day much like any other, mad plots, mythical creatures, and always someone wanting you dead. Still there's always time for another cup of tea.
- The body reeked of rotting flesh, gin, and a strange smell known only to those who have travelled to the underworld.
- The lights on the control panel had begun to flicker again--a cool, unhurried green.
- The wind whipped around the man in the overcoat as he struggled to cross the street, teasing and tormenting him even as it pushed him forward.
- "What is it?"
- When the driver swung the BMW in to the curb, braked to a quick but smooth stop and clicked off the headlights, Brendan Doyle hunched forward on the back seat and stared at the rubbled, fenced-in lot they'd arrived at.
The second book is Acquainted with the Night - Excursions Through the World After Dark, by Christopher Dewdney.
The blurb!
Weaving together science and storytelling, art and anthropology, award-winning poet Christopher Dewdney takes readers on a fascinating journey through the nocturnal realm. In twelve chapters corresponding to the twelve hours of night, he illuminates night's central themes, including sunsets, nocturnal animals, bedtime stories, festivals of the night, fireworks, astronomy, nightclubs, sleep and dreams, the graveyard shift, the art of darkness, and endless nights. With infectious curiousity, a lyrical, intimate tone, and an eye for nighttime beauties both natural and man-made, Dewdney paints a captivating portrait of our hours in darkness.
And an excerpt, this time the first few paragraphs of the second chapter "The Gardens of the Hesperides: Sunset -- 6PM"
It is six o'clock in the evening of our universal day, with its twelve hours of sunshine and twelve hours of night, The heat of the afternoon is beginning to diminish and the light breezes that played through the open windows a few hours ago have become more occasional. The shadows of buildings and trees are lengthening, and as they stretch and intermingle, they begin to form the foundation of a twilight that will eventually rise and blend with the deeper twilight of night.
Behind the buildings and trees the sun is sinking rapidly and its red disc is already touching the horizon. A brilliantly colored sunset is in progress. Above the horizon floats a mountain range of purple clouds that seem motionless, though more peaks appear to be forming, gathering out of a sky that has turned from blue to a pale aquamarine. This is the first hour of twilight, and the beginning of night. Sunset, the gateway to night, has begun.
I'm looking for the first line of the chapter before that, which is entitled "First Night"
