The real first line of The Anubis Gates is:

13. When the driver swung the BMW in to the curb, braked to a quick but smooth stop and clicked off the headlights, Brendan Doyle hunched forward on the back seat and stared at the rubbled, fenced-in lot they'd arrived at.

The rest:

1 As the rays of the hot sun crept over the land, they blazed over the cracked faces of the prisoners, gasping for drink.

The prospective first lines for Acquainted with the Night are:
  1. At five o'clock in the evening, the mad rush of the day has just begun to slacken its pace.
  2. At midnight the air is cold and crisp, and the brilliant lights of the constellations burn against the night's velvety blackness.
  3. I have always been something of a Night Owl.
  4. I love night.
  5. It is, of course, ludicrous to believe that ancient man was ever unfamiliar with the concept of night, or ever feared that the sun, having set, might never reappear.
  6. Let us imagine a day...and a night.
  7. Like bats, he found his way by echolocation.
  8. Night and day are journeys.
  9. The sun does not set; it surrenders.
  10. They call it the witching hour, the very centre of the night.
  11. What might our ancestors have thought of the coming of night, when light has been extinguished and shadows conceal all?

The third book will be Douglas Coupland's Life After God.

The Blurb:

LIFE AFTER GOD is a startling departure from the ironic, post modern world we live in. Douglas Coupland, creator of GENERATION X, cuts through the hype and travels inward to explore the elusive terrain of our dreams and nightmares. In doing so he provides a searing analysis of Western culture, whilst tenderly evoking the complexities of soul searching for a generation without God.

A sample section, the first part of the story My Hotel Year:

It was years ago. I had been going through a patch of intense brooding and had made a big hubbub about severing most of my ties to my past. I had moved into a rent-by-the-week cold water downtown hotel room on Granville Street and had cut all my hair off, stopped shaving, and had thorns tattooed on my right arm. I spent my days lying on my bed starting at the ceiling, listening to the drunken brawls in other rooms, the squawk of other TVs and the smashing of other mirrors. My fellow tenants were a mixture of pensioners, runaways, drug dealers and so forth. The whole ensemble had made a suitably glamorous backdrop for my belief that my poverty, my fear of death, my sexual frustration and my inability to connect with others would carry me off into some sort of Epiphany. I had lots of love to give - it's just that no one was taking it then. I had thought I was finding consolation in solitude, but to be honest I think I was only acquiring a veneer of bitterness.

I'm looking for the first line of the first story, Little Creatures.
