The lines are as follows

"Come, Titus," Plautius called across the moor, "and let's see if you fight as well as you ride!"

There were in fact several fates worse than that of the ex-soldier, Vespasian reminded himself again.

Titus Flavius Vespasianus looked out over the Thracian hills and swore.

Whatever was that?

The smell of Rome in the morning do not mingle comfortably with a hangover.

The clock would not stop ticking, which was driving Vespasian up the wall for several different reasons.

In hindsight, Vespasian knew he had been lost from the first moment he saw her, with the setting sun making a halo of her hair and outlining her body beneath her clothing.

Vespasian cursed to Mars, Jupiter and anybody else who he thought might be paying attention.

Vespasian watched Antonia as she slept and wondered how he had come to be captured by a slave.
