1: On the evening of the fifteenth of March in the Year of Our Lord 1877, Grace Marks passed from this world and unto the Grace of God.
2:This is my story; this is what I remember.
3:I must tell my story, I think, because I do not see that anyone else will tell it for me; certainly not with any accuracy, for there are things that no-one but me knows.
4: All through the last thirty years I've had people asking me what it felt like, or why I did it, or telling me they'd have done just the same, but Dr Jordan was the first one to start by asking if I'd done it in the first place.
5:I am dying now.
6: "Grace! Come here!"
7: Out of the gravel there are peonies growing.
8:When I can't sleep I look at the stars.
