Ky was wandering the halls, cautious considering the nature of what he might find, when he saw a sign on one of the doors. He stared at it for a second, trying very hard to figure out how it got there.

Happy Birthday Ky Kiske, it read. Ky felt a little touched by it despite himself. Most of his birthdays over the last fifteen years had gone ( Read more... )

When Ky turned around, he would see a familiar figure standing the doorway, obviously surprised at his presence. When she had been given a note about his birthday, she made a point of putting the dinner together. It had taken a bit of work, not to mention researching into foods from his world, but she hoped it would be a nice gesture, considering he had offered to cook for her if they met again. The only reason she had left at all was in order to change into some more formal attire, not expecting him to come back so soon.

"Oh, you got back early, guess that spoiled the surprise. " she mumbled sheepishly, though still smiling up at him. "Do you like it?"

She was thankful he wasn't making a big deal of it, since while she could understand many people being surprised by the revelation, she still got a little flustered explaining the matter at times. "I suppose so, I have to be prepared for when I'm older when I have to confront them over matters of state." she said, rolling her eyes as she spoke.

"I'm certain you'll be a wise and just ruler," he replied. "Although I suspect that some of the frustrations will never end." He shared a smile with her, some of his career positions had had him doing something closer to governance than fighting.

"I'm already finding that out. Still, it won't deter me from doing my best." she chirped, grinning back warmly at Ky, both in thanking him and being generally friendly as usual. "I appreciate the vote of confidence though."

Ky ate a few more bites of food. "It's the least I can do. So, do you generally have big birthday celebrations, when you're at home?"

Blinking, she waved a hand. Such a notions was far too showy for Amelia, even if she was a princess. "Oh no, I don't want that big of a fuss on my birthday. I usually just spend it with my daddy, visit my mother's grave, that sort of thing." she replied.

Ahh. "My own parents died when I was nine, but there isn't...really a grave. How did..your mother die, if you don't mind me asking?"

"I'm sorry, it's a shame there's a resting place you can visit." she replied sympathetically, tensing a little at the next question. She didn't honestly mind telling him, she trusted Ky after all. It was just a matter of not wanting to spoil his birthday with the truth. He did ask though, so it was only right to answer. She just had to avoid laying things on too heavily. "She was assassinated by a hired hand. I don't remember much, being too young at the time. But I've been told the reasoning was politically motivated, which unfortunately isn't as uncommon in our family as I would like."

"Oh dear. That does seem very unfortunate." Ky considered Amelia for a moment, his eyes sympathetic. It would be nice to be able to visit a grave for his parents, but Ky knows that their souls no longer reside on their bodies, and he can speak to them when he wishes. He can only hope that they're listening. "Are you at risk of someone trying to assassinate you for political reasons, when you're at home?" he asked.

She shook her head at the question, clearly a little weary, but she didn't feel right about being untruthful on the matter. "Not as of yet, though there have been attempts on my Daddy. It's just as hard though, having to bury relatives relatives when they fall themselves when their plans backfire." she lamented, looking down at her glass with a solemn expression. Having an uncle and cousin, family she remembered so fondly apparently so desperate for the throne they were willing to harm her father, only to die themselves, it was harsh thing to live with, even if Amelia promised herself she wouldn't allow herself to become bitter over it.

"Your relatives do this?" Most of what Ky knew about family was symbolic, a method of applying the ideal of the bond of fatherhood and siblings. He'd met a lot of soldiers as well who were fighting for their families, who were willing to die for the chance that their sister's children might know peace. What Amelia was saying didn't fit into that sort of framework.

"The crown apparently has that great of an appeal." she mumbled, knowing how awful it sounded. Even so, she could never resent them, it wasn't in her to do so, only regret she couldn't help them or prevent the tragic events that occurred. "I'm sorry, it's your birthday and here am I talking about such a depressing topic." she mumbled, shaking her head in apology.

"I'll never understand the wish of people to have more power. I've been given a fair amount, and I don't resent it, but at the same time it's not something I would remotely feel like demanding." Ky just stared at her for a moment when she said it was his birthday and therefore they shouldn't talk of such things.

"Are there rules about appropriate birthday conversation?" he asked, curious.

She gave a small nod of recognition, managing a small smile as she swirled the contents of her glass in her hand. "The only interest I have in it at all is so I can do good. It's hard to understand why my relatives are so interested in it." she sighed, looking at him apologetically again.

"Well no, but this is supposed to be celebration. I did this to make you happy, and here I am talking about something something that's going to have the opposite effect." she replied.

"Your presence is plenty," Ky said. "I've never really been able to stop thinking about serious matters, nor do I wish to keep our conversations to the trivial merely because it happens to be the day I was born on."

"Well, as long as I'm not spoiling this for you." she replied, managing a warm smile, reaching out to gently place her hand over his, the gesture innocent, friendly and affectionate.
