[Mike's had a pretty rough time of it in Luceti so far. His brother turned out to be gay and dating a weird guy with no chi. His other brother is in love with a pretty hot chick who apparently likes it rough. His third brother... well, his third brother's the same as he's always been, actually, as is his father. But one of their most hated enemies

But Robert almost wonders if he's hallucinating due to aftereffects when he hears the unmistakable voice of Michelangelo.
After the repeated and many uncomfortable debacles of the last while, he actually wants Robert there? And for his own birthday party?]
... If you would truly like for me to be... I would not mind.
[Clearly Robert needs to bring Mike something as a gesture of "look, I'm not a horrible person, maybe we can actually be friendly or something"... but what...?]

[...so it'd be rude not to invite you.
It is an olive branch. But it's the most awkward olive branch ever.]

At... at any rate, thank you very much for the generous offer, especially in light of your family's recent hospitality. I appreciate it greatly.
[And he's still thankful, very much, for Mike rescuing Vivi.]
Ah... and, happy birthday as well. Though I suspect it... hasn't been the best time lately for it, but one can hope that things will improve somewhat from this point on, correct?

What?
[Don said you can't read people. He never said you didn't make any sense yourself.]
How can it not be the best time for my birthday? It is when it is.
Reply
Er. For the former part I... meant that I was appreciative of the desire to include me. I, er, h-haven't ever really been invited to something like this. [Save small celebrations with Benjamin...] ... It is simply something I felt deserved thanks...
And, well, the second part was referring to the unfortunate proximity with the experiment. Though that cannot be helped, yes; certainly not by any of us. We will simply have to endeavour to make your party a successful one then, to compensate for that.
[Not that Robert's any good at that. But he hopes he won't ruin it, at least.]

[Unfortunately for you, Mike's already gotten into the habit of disliking you, which means that your failure to understand bugs him more than it should.]
You should bring me a present.
[You're also the only one he's being this rude to. Don't you feel special? But he doesn't mean anything especially unkind by it. He's just being annoying. Which is... almost a form of affection coming from him.]
Reply
He also doesn't recognize this as rudeness. Which is why he smiles a little, despite himself, and says in a very earnest voice:]
I wished to, Michelangelo. It would simply be a matter of getting something suitable for you. [His voice brightens somewhat.] Perhaps I ought to consider getting you more kitchen utensils or perhaps baking supplies... After all, you are an absolutely phenomenal baker, based on the evidence of the one pie you sent.
[Robert sounds completely serious at the next part.] You seriously ought to consider volunteering at the local bakery, Michelangelo.

I don't think that's a good idea...
[For all sorts of reasons. Karai comes most noticeably to mind. Having a routine is a good way to get caught, even if they are allowed outside during daylight. Still... The idea has been planted.]
Reply
Why not? Such talent should be employed, and I am certain nobody would mind when they realize how proficient you are. [Robert doesn't know of the real threat Karai poses, even though he heard of her. After all, he was walking around in broad daylight as a turtle and didn't run into her... yet.]

Ah, well, of course it is your choice to do as you wish.
But would that be an acceptable gift for you? Or... would you prefer something else? [Hello, mildly sheepish derpscientist.]

I... would rather get something you would truly like. I wish to... reduce whatever animosity exists between us, somehow.
Reply
[You had to bring that up. Well, Mike supposes he owes you an explanation. He's been doing a lot of thinking after your outburst at Ami's, so he will try to explain so you can understand.]
Have you ever heard of The Neverending Story?
[In his own, Mike-tastic way.]
Reply
Robert cringes a little.] Is it a fictional text of some kind?

Anyway, it's about this magical world made up of people's beliefs. And people stop believing in things, right? So the world starts disappearing. And when people look at the parts that have disappeared, it's just... Nothing. It's like being blind. And it's pretty dang freaky.
And... that's what you're like. Just... nothing. Where there should be something.
[Be grateful Robert. That was pretty coherent for a Mike-story.]
