Title: A Question of Trust
Rating: FRC (PG)
Pairings: House/Chase
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: I make no attempt to pretend that I own House MD, or any of the associated characters
Summary: Some things you just have to take on faith
Notes: Set...somewhere mid season five. Inspired by this ramble. Also, my first fic of '09!

The thing about glass doors was that they were specifically designed in such a way that it wasn't possible to slam them. Which was a shame, because Chase's entrance would have been more impressive if he could have slammed the office door behind him.

"No," he said without preamble.
House removed a strawberry lollipop - stolen from the clinic, naturally - from his mouth and looked thoughtfully at the ceiling. "Funny. I could have sworn you just said 'no', when what you were supposed to say was 'yes, of course'. Never mind." He pointed at the door. "Go out and do it again. I'll wait."
Chase ignored him. "I'm not doing it," he said, throwing at sheaf of CAT scans down on the desk; "It's not possible to operate that close to the spine without causing serious damage. I'll lose my license."
"How about if you're careful, and don't cause serious damage?"
"No. Find some other surgeon. One who doesn't know any better."

House grasped his cane and stood, taking full advantage of his few inches of extra height. Despite that and a dozen other factors, Chase wasn't backing down. Unfortunately for him, neither was House.

"I'm not going to find another surgeon."
"Just because you won't-"
"Not won't. Can't."
Chase's eyes narrowed. "There are plenty of qualified surgeons in the hospital."
"Any idiot can get a couple of letters after their name these days," House said dismissively. Chase opened his mouth to retort, but House cut him off; "You're right."

That was absolutely unprecedented. Chase blinked, utterly derailed, and ran the conversation though his head again a few times. No, he'd definitely heard that correctly.

"I'm right?"
"You're right," House agreed, seemingly unperturbed by this complete reversal of the natural order of things. He leaned in closer, voice low and certain. "It'll be difficult. And dangerous. I don't want any surgeon operating on this one. I want someone I trust."

Silence.

Chase held out his hand. "Give me the scans. When will the patient be ready for surgery?"
