Continuing on with my Top Ten Moments picspam (part 1 is
here)...
6. Pretty much all of Midnight, but more specifically, this:
I think I can pretty conclusively say that Midnight is my favourite episode of Ten-era Who. And this scene of the Doctor losing his voice and his power and everyone turning against him is the closest I have ever come to legitimately having my belief that he'd not die suspended. My heart just pounds all the way through this scene, and doesn't let up until after the credits roll. Even on repeat viewings (of which I have done many), I get so wrapped up in the action, I forget all about what I know happens.
7. The circle of mirrors
Donna ♥ It is a little bit of a shame that the beetle in this episode is so rubbish, because it does tend to take me out of the story at times, but Catherine Tate just blows everything and everyone right off the screen in this scene. And one thing that I loved about this episode in general and these final scenes in particular is how Rose takes the place of the Doctor, becomes him in his absence from the world (and one gets the feeling that she's done that quite consistently while in Pete's World). And I think this episode is one of the reasons that I don't seem to be as upset by Donna's fate as some other folks in fandom. This episode proves that she doesn't need to know the Doctor to be brilliant, and brave, and kind and wonderful. This version of Donna Noble never met him once, yet she does this incredible thing. I actually think it's a bit insulting to her to suggest that having had her memories of the Doctor taken away that she's somehow now worthless. She will always be every bit as important as Time Lords.
8. "You're like worms!"
How much do I love the Tate/Tennant double act? THIS MUCH. The comic timing here is absolutely impeccable, and DT's mimicking of Donna's mannerisms is fabulous. It perfectly showcases their chemistry, and what made series 4 such a joy to watch. And it's the beginning of the slightly different characterisation that Ten II gets in what little we see of him n this episode. He's a little bit more... oomphy. He feels younger, he even looks younger (the choice of having him not wear a shirt with a collar accomplishes this). And I love Donna going from this brash argument with Ten II to again insisting that she's not important. It's an amazing transition from CT.
9. "The laws of time are mine, and they will obey me!"
Instead of caps, you're getting gifs, because I'm lazy and the gifs I already have and the caps I'd have to go seek out. Anyway. The complete rage and fury in this scene is actually a little difficult to watch. You want fire and ice and rage? Here it is, folks, laid bare. No more hiding behind clever words or a cheerful facade. Davros would be proud; this is the Doctor's soul. But the thing is, he's saving people. It would have been so easy to write a "evil Doctor" story where he inhales evil!pollen or there's some other McGuffin and he just turns into opposite Doctor, but that's not what this is at all. He's doing the right thing, sort of. He's saving people's lives, he's doing what you'd expect the Doctor to do. But it's wrong. It's all wrong. From the second he walks back into Bowie Base, he's completely terrifying. He's doing the right thing, but it's not right at all. Brilliant and chilling.
10. TBA
Haha, fooled ya'. I'm leaving #10 spot empty because Ten's era ain't over yet, is it?
But to make up for it, please enjoy these screencaps from one of the Behind-the-Scenes Hamlet specials that have been stealthily airing in the wee hours on BBC2.
Whoops how'd that get in there?!
