(( NOT A FETISH ))

HAIR FETISH MINI-ESSAY ENABLED BY IRC

Also because, you know, it came up this week with the bet with Rin and her IMMEDIATE FAILURE, and then again here. Wherein Tomo says it's not actually "hair" she likes EXACTLY, which is true, and that she can't explain the real fetish, which is also true, because she WILL think about it and will still be no closer to understanding wtf is going on in her head. XD; She doesn't understand enough about her own motivations to ever fully get why she does it.

LUCKILY I DO and the hair thing is NOT in fact completely random! Well. OOCly, about half of it was because I noticed her doing it a lot in the manga. I'd be going through grabbing panels for icons and it's just--something that pops up repeatedly. She hits people lightly on the head as a sign of affection, or sets her hand there, or ruffles their hair, or tugs on their pigtails, and so on. I've had at least 5 different "touching your head" icons from the manga alone and that's just from the volume and a half where her hair is short. XD So I'd make these icons because they were cute, and use them because they were cute, and then I'd be like "Hahah what she's touching that person's head a lot. She's noticing so-and-so's hair. She wants to play with that pigtail. SOME QUIRK IS DEVELOPING HERE THAT I AM TOTALLY UNAWARE OF." And so on! I hope to god I'm not the only person this happens to.

So it was something that developed slowly in camp. She didn't always have a fetish, despite all the head-patting she does in canon. But yes, she does now. WHAT HAPPENED WAS THIS.

The original reason why Tomo does the "touching your head" thing with anyone is always condescension and superiority of some sort. Patting someone is--not always a very kind form of physical contact. XD In some of her icons this is more true than in others (which is why they all get used in different situations). Tomo is also short and kinda dislikes this about herself. Touching someone's head makes her feel not so short anymore. A part of me is higher up than you, HAH. If Tomo is standing and someone else is sitting, she ALWAYS makes it a point to touch them on the head as she goes by. Because she's enjoying being taller than them, for once. Even in her canon, she is the shortest person besides Chiyo-chan. And whenever someone is lower than her in a panel, either because they're sitting or because they're Chiyo, she's usually going right for their head.

So some of the hair thing is a power thing because "a power thing" plays a big part in almost everything Tomo does ahahah and a physical height thing. And there are other things she can do with hair! Like irritate people! Pulling Rin's hair was NOT due to having a fetish for it, because that hadn't developed fully when they first met. Her hair was pretty and Tomo wanted to touch it because it looked soft (okay maybe it had developed a LITTLE), but it was also a way to annoy her, which is the only way Tomo sees to get attention from a gorgeous ice queen like Rin. XD Likewise, noogieing Ari is a way to annoy him and make him react. It doesn't always have anything to do with wanting to touch hair.

And it's also a "safe" form of physical contact. The thing is that Tomo really likes touching people, but she doesn't like to do so too affectionately unless she knows them very well. She doesn't glomp people randomly like many other genki female characters in anime. She doesn't even HUG people EVER. This is stuff that, in camp, she does to Ed and Sano and once in awhile Robert (and she climbs on Sakuraba because she HAS to to reach his head, hahah), and no one else, and it took them a long time to get to that point. But she does want to TOUCH people. So she finds other ways to do it, and hitting them is one, and messing with their hair is another. It's safe because it's not affectionate enough to make her feel uncomfortable, and no one really questions it, and it can mean whatever she wants it to mean depending on how she does it. Plus, it makes her feel tall! Yay!

. . . The actual "fetish" part of it developing? Is largely Ed's fault. XD Tomo does the patting/ruffling thing a lot more with people she's comfortable with, and she got comfortable with Ed pretty quickly, plus he's SHORT. He's short enough that it's very easy to fall into doing that with him. Also? He has really really nice soft hair. And third? He has a thing for people playing with it, which Tomo has vaguely picked up on. So that degraded pretty quickly into playing with his hair a lot, which degraded into positive happy slightly sexual Ed associations with the action, which is why she does it whenever possible with him especially and to a lesser extent with--anyone who will let her, and who has hair of a similar texture.

So now with certain people, especially Ed and Sano, it's like second nature to her to do this while talking to them, because 1. she likes the feel of it, 2. it's affectionate but not enough so to make either person uncomfortable or suspicious, and 3. it generally feels good for the other person, which Tomo LIKES because yay positive reaction and attention. And so she can get away with it. With Sano especially, it's a way to touch him directly for extended periods of time without him going "wtf are you doing?" the way he would if she started--rubbing his shoulders or sides, or whatever. Which she would DO if she could get away with it.

And with other people she doesn't know well, she will take notice of it, and if they have nice hair and react favorably--like Shikamaru--then she will exploit this, because it's gotten to the point where it just feels good to do. THANKS FOR THAT, ED. Ed is going to be responsible for all of Tomo's fetishes I swearz. It's his fault she's developing an interest in biting.

And for the record, Tomo's favorite kind of hair is medium-length (chin to shoulders), straight, shiny, and soft. |D So if your character has this kind of hair, yeah, she will notice it and might ask them about playing with it at some point. Although hair with sticky-up parts like Sakuraba's and Larxene's is ALSO A PLUS. T^Td

I'll shut up now.
