Assuming those (very nice) high-up Tokyo shots were taken from your friends' apartment, that must be one SERIOUSLY nice place. I can't even fathom how much it costs to live in a place like that...
There are new engineering buildings at Stanford University with atriums that are only five stories deep. Since they are not very tall, the designers decided that it would be a good idea to make the square atrium opening on each floor smaller as you go down. This design is the church of vertigo inducement.
