Ugh.. the diskpart utility has never worked stably fr me. You can dynamically increase the VMWare partitions using the VMWare native tools, can't you? Just avoid the VMWare purple screen of death. And do a snapshot before you try all that mucking around. ;-)

Oh I've been using vmkfstools to expand partitions forever...this is how to expand the Windows system partition within the newly-expanded virtual disk...
