Here's the most fun thing to do. Let's say you have a talking head, maybe a professor just for the sake of argument. You take the + wipe going to straight black, and you ease just barely into it so that you just have thin black line - kinda like crosshairs. Then you play with the centering joystick for awhile moving the center of the crosshairs around and eventually maybe coming to rest on the middle of his forhead. Then as the big finale, you say "Pow!" as you cut from that scene to pure red.

Oh man, hours of entertainment right there.
