He stood out in the field for hours, shouting at the sky trying to get the angels’ attention. He shouted at the sky until he was blue in the face, till his throat was hoarse, but none of them came. Lana felt her chest tighten as soon as she heard the word brother. She knew what it was like to lose a sibling to something evil, even in this way. Chloe had never been her blood, but she had been more family than anyone then living had ever been. Dean didn't respond at first, not wanting to let it get under his skin, but he couldn't help it. This is what he needed right then. He needed someone to take care of him for a change as oppose to him taking care of everyone else.

He shifted so that he was facing her more, sliding an arm around her waist and pulling her closer, needing the contact more than anything else. "It's all my fault."

The phrase brought a sting to her eyes that she hadn't experienced for years. It was what Clark had always said when he couldn't save someone in any sense of the phrase. She couldn't talk him out of the guilt, she knew that, but she could try to offer as much comfort as she could.

Lana lifted a hand to stroke the back of his head. "You don't know that."

He let out a bitter laugh as he pulled back from her, looking her in the eye. "No, I do actually. I left him alone. He wouldn't have said yes if he hadn't been alone."
