Fermina Daza fell in love with Florentino Ariza before she was eighteen. They wrote love letters to one another, eventually promising each other marriage. Fermina knows her father would be opposed to Florentino since he wants her to marry into aristocracy; as a result, she and her aunt keep the love affair a secret. One day she is caught reading one of his love letters and expelled from school. Her father, furious, sends her away to forget about Florentino. She does. She realizes that it is possible to be happy without him and tries to forget their love. She goes on to marry the successful, Dr. Urbino. Their marriage lasts for fifty years, while Florentino promises to wait until Urbino dies to get another chance with Fermina. The marriage that Fermina and Urbino have is stable and beautiful; she is happy, though she thinks of Florentino from time to time. The day Urbino dies, Florentino comes back into Fermina's life. She cries all night, scared to be alone and in the morning she realizes that she had been thinking of Florentino the whole time. The letters begin again, but they are not like the ones of his youth, she reads them without a reply. "It was a meditation on life, love, old age, death: ideas that had often fluttered around her head like nocturnal birds but dissolved into a trickle of feathers when she tried to catch hold of them. There they were, precise, simple, just as she would have liked to say them . . . " She knew that her fate had brought her Florentino so she would be secure once again. In old age, they are finally brought together.
