art & literature

_name a musician [or group] who has effectively changed your perspective or expanded your thinking. include lyrics that bear some significance to you, and describe their representation of your ideas & emotions.

honestly, i'd have to say neutral milk hotel. the lyrics are written so beautifully and remain very powerful. no matter who you are im sure you can relate to atleast one of their songs in some way, shape, or form. the subject matter of the songs are that of which not many artists write about (i.e the holocaust, abortion, miscarrages) and its terribly moving.

"And your mom would sink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try"

these lyrics really spoke to me when i first head them. its from 'king of carrot flowers pt. one' for those who dont know. when i was about three years old my mother tried to kill herself, luckily she survived but it was definitely a very shocking experience considering i was so young at the time. she just told me she was feeling sick and she was taking some pills and i was laying down on the bed next to her and she began to get pale and she wasnt breathing and wouldn't wake up when i shook her. luckily my father came home at that time and he rushed her to a hospital. also the second and third line in that quote makes me remember the era when my father and mother faught pretty much every day and he would always tell me and my mother how he was going to kill himself. we had to call the cops numerous times to keep him from hurting himself but in the end he never really could go through with it. so the line "each one a little more than he could dare to try" is like a mirror into the situation.

_explain, in depth, a particular work of art that you find meaningful, and its importance to you on a personal level.

van gogh's "the cafe terrace on the place du forum arles at night"

when i was a small child my grandmother had this painting in her living room in view of where i would sit with her in the chair. i would always gaze at the painting and she would make up stories about the people eating and walking to the cafe. it was a fond memory.

personal & political

_what is one social ill you wish you could change and why? how does this affect you in your daily life, or in the lives of those around you?

i believe the biggest social ill today would be mass commercialism. at times life just feels like a drawn out commercial for a soft drink or a new brand of toothpaste. everything is brought to you by [insert brand name here]. it just doesnt seem pure. sports these days are all sponsered by alchohol companies, when originally sports were meant to be a fun activity not a way for a corporation to make money. pretty soon one will go to church and look up at the sign "church of christ: now sponsered by pepsi." with a little motorized jesus smiling repeating the line "for those who think young". every ten minutes during the sermon the pastor or priest or whoever will make an accouncement about a new brand of toliet paper or red lobster's all you can eat crab leg tuesdays. everything is about money.

_who or what has most inspired your intellectual growth and why?

i believe i would have to say music. through music i have improved my vocabulary, learned things, broadened my horizons on life. music is the universal language and without music i dont know who i would be. music makes a person who they are. it helps one understand life and express themselves fully.

_do you feel that you are prejudiced?

aren't we all at one point in our lives? not so much in terms of being racist but im sure we all think we're better than another at one time. society itself is prejudiced when it comes to status quo. upper class and lower class sections of town. its pretty much segregation. 'all men are created equal' my ass. if all men are created equal i would be living in a three story house with a pool and two car garage. i mean, i dont think anyone can honestly say that they havn't ever thought they were smarter than another. everyone is prejudiced.

_do you think it is necessary to be politically correct in a learning environment? a working environment?

in all honestly, its literally impossible to be anything BUT politically correct in a learning enviroment nor a working enviroment. the public school system focuses the curriculum solely on being politically correct so in being politcally incorrect you would not be doing what is told of you, thus you would fail. the same can be said for the working world, depending on what your job is. for instance if you're a salesman many of your customers will not purchase from you if you are politically incorrect with your ways. so to answer the question, yes, it is necessary.

_in our generation, who do you feel deserves recognition as a genius, and why? what characteristics do they possess that are definitive of this title?

as cheesy as it may sound i think the creators of livejournal deserve recognition as a whole. the program has brought so many people together and friendships have been formed, drama has been created, and it holds many memories in its wires and severs. i've made many friends through livejournal and some i've even met in real life before. i just think its a great innovation and the creators deserve recognition.

free expression

_describe your greatest passion in life.

photography; although im definitely not the best it definitely is a passion of mine. everywhere i go i bring my camera and record my day to day events in subtle pictures.. i would really like to take a photography course and improve.

_describe yourself in ten adjectives - five positive traits, and five character flaws.
