art & literature:
_name a musician [or group] who has effectively changed your perspective or expanded your thinking. include lyrics that bear some significance to you, and describe their representation of your ideas & emotions.
crass has influenced me the most out of any band i've listened to. there's something about their raw politicism and willingness to spread their message and do what they believe in is really impressive to me. they really helped me to figure out a lot of my own political beliefs, and made me realize that if i disagreed with something, i should get up and make noise about it. they also taught me that for music to be good, the instruments don't have to be played in the standard way.
Be exactly who you want to be, do what you want to do
I am he and she is she but you're the only you
No one else has got your eyes, can see the things you see
It's up to you to change your life and my life's up to me
The problems that you suffer from are problems that you make
The shit we have to climb through is the shit we choose to take
If you don't like the life you live, change it now it's yours
Nothing has effects if you don't recognise the cause
If the programme's not the one you want, get up, turn off the set
It's only you that can decide what life you're gonna get
If you don't like religion you can be the antichrist
If your tired of politics you can be an anarchist
But no one ever changed the church by pulling down a steeple
And you'll never change the system by bombing number ten
Systems just aren't made of bricks they're mostly made of people
You may send them into hiding, but they'll be back again
If you don't like the rules they make, refuse to play their game
If you don't want to be a number, don't give them your name
If you don't want to be caught out, refuse to hear their question
Silence is a virtue, use it for your own protection
They'll try to make you play their game, refuse to show your face
If you don't want to be beaten down, refuse to join their race
Be exactly who you want to be, do what you want to do
I am he and she is she but you're they only you
_explain, in depth, a particular work of art that you find meaningful, and its importance to you on a personal level.
honestly, right now, i've had the catcher in the rye on my mind a lot. holden caulfield is a character i can really really relate to. the way he cares so deeply and selflessly about people and things that matter to him really strikes a chord with me. the same way he also doesn't apply himself to things he's not interested in makes me relate to him even more. there's also the part of the book when he buys the record of the song that his sister, phoebe, really like and is walking through central park and he drops it. that part always makes me want to cry because i can understand the sheer dissapointment of it. it's like being three or four and haveing the ice cream fall off the cone. your heart just drops, and i really have a hard time doing things that might dissapoint someone just because of that part.

personal & political:
_what is one social ill you wish you could change and why? how does this affect you in your daily life, or in the lives of those around you?
the one social ill i'd fix would be money, meaning money wouldn't exist anymore. without money, there is no class, and without money everything is free. once everything is free, a sports car is the same price as a geo, and people desire what they need as opposed to what costs more money. in a basic sense it destroys greed, because nothing is really better than anything else, people just get the things that fit them. it also alleviates hunger issues because food is free. as well as housing and clothing, so people would have a place to live and clothes to keep them warm. people would be better off without money, or a system based on spending money, getting them to spend money on wants rather than needs, and this would alleviate the hunger for needless things, which wouldn't be special anymore, and puts the focus on needs instead.
_who or what has most inspired your intellectual growth and why?
technically books did, but then you have to look back at who reccommended the books to me, so that would be any of my friends, my mom, my aunt, my teacher, and countless other people. books influenced me a lot by really making me think about how people acted and reacted. it made me really ponder human nature and caused me to create my own little mini theories, and also to argue with myself. i started to be able to see both sides of arguments and figure out the pros and cons for both. it just sharpened my thinking a lot. i also have the people who told me i was wrong in thinking the things i do, because it made me realize that i need solid evidence and speaking skills to back myself up. both of these things just made me really think a lot about everything, and taught me to pick everything apart.
_do you feel that you are prejudiced?
i can be prejudiced sometimes, i think when i'm with a large group of people i get anti-social and come up with shallow way of why i shouldn't be socializing with them anyways. i'm also prejudiced against jocks, but that's because of my experience with them.
_do you think it is necessary to be politically correct in a learning environment? a working environment?
to an extent you have to be politically correct in a learning environment. you can't just go around substituting gay for stupid and calling everyone a faggot. that doesn't help any learning situation. but for things like learning about literature, where they might use words objectionable to some people, it should be said because the words are there for a reason, their connotations make them stronger and it's important to learn ways to use words to convey a strong message. if we're talking about censorship, then no, it shouldn't be politically correct in a learning environment, but if we're talking about the way in which one would talk about another person, then people have to be politically correct.
as far as in the workplace goes, you're dealing with people, and people deserve to be treated well, so political correctness is needed.
_in our generation, who do you feel deserves recognition as a genius, and why? what characteristics do they possess that are definitive of this title?
walker evans deverves the status of a genius because he really made nothing seem like everything through his photographs. people with nothing seemed like they had all they could ever want. evans made these people look noble with his photographs, which is an amazing thing to do, especially with people who had everything taken away from them, and are living in the shadow of just having had a better life.
free expression:
_describe your greatest passion in life.
my greatest passion in life is learning. all i do is find new thing. whether it's books or music or movies or new points of political theory, i just want to know more. i just want a knowledge of everything, and that's what drives me.
