For future reference:

I am disappointed that people are refusing to answer the question on genius [saying our generation's geniuses are too young to acknowledge]. Let me clarify ( Read more... )

it obviously doesn't imply that the genius be living, or everyone would have understood the question the way you want it to be understood. the phrase "our generation" is quite correctly interpreted to mean someone of our similar age. noam chomsky predates my parents' generation. and i am not aware of tim hawkings, nor could i find any information on the web about him. did you mean stephen hawking?

perhaps you should try and have the question changed to say, "in our era, who do you feel deserves recognition as a genius, and why? what characteristics do they possess that are definitive of this title?" perhaps that would provide you with the sort of answers you are searching for.

when you originally asked me this, i misinterpreted too. should i change the wording of this question? i find the recent answers really unsatisfying, too.

I actually skipped the genius question accidentally at first, but I didn't bother to change it because it seemed like it was meant to be about people who are indeed around my age - in my generation. Had I known it was era, I would have said Stephen Hawking. A Brief History of Time is one of my favourite books, even if I don't understand even the basics of quantum physics. :)

This is slightly off topic, but the word genius is very broad to begin with. A person could be a literary genius or a musical genius, but be lacking in other areas. As most of us are very talented in one field or another, this is obviously not something new to you ( ... )

I think you have good ideas, but I disagree with the "personal hero" question. The inspiration sector seems to be where most applicants are comfortable discussing someone they admire or are proud of. My guess is that people would respond with their parents as the typical answer for a personal hero anyway. What constitutes a hero is just as broad as labeling someone a genius. The genius question demands an assertive decision and usually indicates if an applicant is "ballsy" enough to cover it with detailed support.

I could care less if someone views Madonna as a marketing genius or Noam Chomsky as a political one - as long they articulate why.

Tim Hawkings is an artist.

The question came from a Yale lecture, and no one had trouble interpreting it, so I think the problem is this community.

No, I majored in psych. and minored in professional writing. I sat in on graduate school art lectures all year because my fiance is an art student.

You have been receiving a lot of criticism lately for your bold NOs to numerous applicants. However, I think you have one of the highest standards of voting integrity here and encourage you to keep denying your heart out.

I hope that last statement wasn't aimed (even in part) at me. I haven't been too interested in the internet recently, what with real life and all. I still find you and nicole to be the most important things to come of silly rating communities. And I guess if you both are leaving, and Daniel already has, I will too. Cocky of us all to make goodbye posts. I will just say mine to you.

Dont disappear into the real world, or if you do, at least keep in touch with me through mail. I will have a cd in your mailbox soon [with a letter]. You know I enjoy your company, Danielle.

Good to know. I will always have these 6 hours a day 4 days a week of the internet. But it is becoming far too much. Physical mail is prettier anyhow.
