How complicated an operation are we talking?

simplest possible, stick it in an empty slot and roll. no drivers, no software, is used as soon as you switch on.

...provided that what you put in is nicely matched. Either buy more sticks of the same you already have, or all the same of new. And try to buy a trusted brand, like Corsair, Crucial or Kingston.

Yeah, what those two said. It's not difficult or expensive. What's your motherboard?

This would be the first question... how do I find that out and what Ram i already have? I know i've no free slots so would need to replace existing sticks [i believe currently 2x 512]

do you know what you've got in there now? and what space you have for more?
ram's easier than most, but you need to get the right type, and get only enough that your machine can support. if you can wait 3 weeks i can come show you exactly how so you'll know for future reference? or if you know the spec of what you've already got (size of ram, and mobo make/serial would be enough) i can tell you what your options are? or in fact you can probably just find someone else to help, nottingham's not exactly short of computer geeks. x

I've answered spike above, if the issue is still outstanding when you return I may ply you with Cider in exchange for assistance.

I do know i have no free space so it would be a full on replace job.

It's so simple that even I failed to fuck it up, once I'd taken the appropriate advice.

Yeah, it's the advice i need since i've no idea what type I can use, support and if i can fully replace the existing sticks.

It does hearten me though, to hear that you were successful.
