I think what defines a human being in the most techical aspect of the phrase would be to be of this genus, walking upright on two legs.

but as far as what it means more spiritually? i think it would have to entail someone with the desire to grow, change, and experience. and to somehow relay these things they've learned to the rest of the race via whatever means they are most adept with.
