Fandoms, Fans, and Inevitable Fanwank

Fanwank is everywhere. From the hard-core Tolkien scholars who seemingly turn into mini-Balrogs themselves when you talk about Balrog wings to the people who spontaneously combust (and not in a good way) if you so much as breathe the word 'twilight', there's something about fandom that turns normally rational people into enraged lunatics ( Read more... )

Bravo! Despite my ability to by dyspeptic at other fans' (and fandoms') expense, I often feel the same way you do. Also, you expressed it in a most elegant way!

Hey, there are some fandoms that make me want to gag. There are pairings in *my* fandoms that make me want to gag. But that doesn't give me an excuse to attack people.

I don't know how elegant that is, but thanks for the vote of confidence!

I don't understand why we can't acknowledge our preferences and respect the preferences of those around us.

Because some people are just natural wankers--whether it is in fandom or in RL. Just look back at the recent election, if you want evidence of that!

Fortunately, there are enough civil people in the world to grease the wheels made squeaky by those "natural wankers".
