Well, I'd intended just to edit my previous post with my Sherlock Holmes reaction. But I think it deserves a full post. Beware, spoilers make lurk (though I've done my best to keep them pretty vague).

I'm willing to bet that Sherlock Holmes is very nearly, if not the most "fanficced" character/series of all time, at least in an officially published sort of way. (Star Trek is another frontrunner here.) There are about a billion and a half different versions of the great detective, in play, radio, television, movies, and books. Guy Ritchie's version isn't a direct copy of Conan Doyle's work, but taken as a piece of fanfiction, it's incredibly, incredibly good.

The good: The cast was superb. I was initially a little skeptical of Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes, but in the end, it turned out to be an AWESOME THING. Jude Law as Watson? Be still my beating heart. The dialogue was snappy, the action fun and exciting, there was an actual bull pup, and the depictions of Holmes' brain processes were so. Much. Fun. I have never wanted to live on Baker Street more, and Holmes and Watson? I just love you guys forever. Also, the soundtrack was incredible! Hans Zimmer always does well, but I was just enchanted by how well the soundtrack was done.

The bad: Irene Adler. Seriously, guys...Holmes isn't in love with her, never was, and she's not a master criminal. Give it up. Also, the magic angle was a little weird. I'm glad Holmes came to the conclusions he did, but I thought there might have been other ways to go about it. And we almost made a movie without Professor Moriarty as the villain...almost.

The crazy: I seriously think Guy Ritchie and his screenwriters play Assassin's Creed. There are several crazy similarities to the games. I really hope I'm making this up.

The slashy: Omg, guys. Could they be any more married? To those who aren't into the slash angle, their friendship is epic, and I love it. To the slashers of the bunch: that tiger rug is BEGGING for fic. As is Holmes' "Be gentle, Watson," line, and the rest of the freaking movie. The whole time, I was thinking, "Lover's quarrel." And at the end, "And now they'll make up." Mary might become part of a triad, I don't know. All I know is...omg, they're so married.

In conclusion: loved it. The DVD will be mine. And yeah...I want to write fic.
