Is Gargoyles Dying?

Is the Gargoyles fandom slowly dying? I’ve been a fan of Gargoyles for a long time, but I was re-introduced to the fandom when a television station started showing reruns in the fall of ’99. My interested was reignited and I dove deep into the humble beginnings of the internet for more, finding websites and fanfiction. I found TGS, found the GFW ( Read more... )

Well, in my case, I know I made a few lifelong friendships because of this fandom. Although it helps that I have much more in common with them than love of a TV show ( ... )

Yeah, there's been a lot of people who've done a lot of good for this fandom, some from the very beginning when people just started to reach out on the internet. And I read about a lot of good friendships that have started because of it. I always hoped I could go to a Gathering because I was obviously interested in the theme, but there were people I wanted to meet face to face, like Ellen Stolfa, Kimberly T, Josh Wurzel, Leo Ketcham, and more. But it was either too far away or I just couldn't come up with the money or the time off when it was close to me (I could've driven down to LA from my town). I'm glad people can come away with this with more than just a love for a television show.

And is Greg still trying to get the comics back up and going? I haven't heard much after SLG couldn't afford the license renewal.

Yeah, SLG is in negotiations with Disney to publish just graphic novels, I think. Last we heard, they hope to have an announcement soon. Fingers crossed.

Damn, nice. I'd love for it to be continued. I just hope the market's there to make some decent sales.

I do believe that a lot of friendships have outgrown Gargoyles. While I agree the fandom has contracted immensely - which I think was a matter of time, it was never a huge fandom and the show ended over a decade ago - I have three close friends in the area who I met through, directly or indirectly, through Gargoyles. All three, plus a fourth who I also met through the fandom, were at my wedding last year ( ... )

Like I said to Greg above, I'm glad to see friendships were borne from the fandom, enough to invite to your wedding. I'd love to see the Gathering continue in some form, but I think something special is lost if you change from that one big annual event, plus anyone new to the event may feel a little left out when good friends get together. But I can see the reasoning, as there's a lot of people who would want to get together regardless.

As I was recently zipping through the archives, I had to include some Allaine stories and enjoyed them all over again (I'm not surprised in the slightest you're hosting a show with the main topic as femslash). I hope your plans to write your own fiction goes well.

I didn’t want to admit it until very recently, but yes, the fandom is slowly dying. It was dying even before it was announced that this year's Gathering would be the last one; Christine Morgan pointed it out to me last spring (when we were trying so hard to get enough stories for this year’s Gargoyles Anthology to put it into print-which we didn’t), but that news that there would be no more conventions was another mortal blow to the fandom. Not that I can blame the folks who've been staffing the convention year after year, for wanting to stop! Preparing and running a convention is incredibly time-consuming, wallet-draining and even emotionally exhausting; it’s actually amazing they kept it running so long ( ... )

Yes, delays can kill a comic, no matter what the subject matter is, especially if it's a comic that doesn't have the mass appeal of the two big boys (Marvel and DC). I don't know if I lost hope, but I can lose interest when months can pass between issues, and so can other, more casual fans of the property. Why Disney raised the licensing fees is beyond me. Unlike the DVDS, this is practically free money in their pockets with virtually no overhead and nothing for them to produce. It's not often an older property of theirs can be made to make more money ten to fifteen years later.

Yes, I am in hearty agreement about all those men and women who ran the Gathering. I wish I had been able to attend one, and to meet a lot of people who I knew only through e-mails, websites and pictures.

Anyways, it's good to hear from you and let's not lose touch, hmm? You still planning to release some more stories still percolating around in that brain of yours? I know I've got a few to go.
