I think the main concern with desensitization revolves around the boundaries between fantasy and reality being distorted. When I was a kid, I knew this kid named Joe. He thought he was the Green Ranger. Since he thought he was a might spandex-wearing superhero, he also thought that attacking us with his "karate" moves was perfectly acceptable. We were "putties", you see. The influence of Mighty Morphing Power Rangers on Joe is a hot topic in itself; it hasn't been fully proven that violent shows and the like actually influence behaviour. Either way, it is still true that our society has been somewhat desensitized. Some of it's necessary, as morals and standards change constantly.
As for the "War on Terror", that's a result of American nationalist bullshit. They jumped into a war because of their pride. Although I really think that something definetly had to be done to stop terrorism, the actions taken were definetly wrong. There are no "good guys" in that war.
