Wallace was not letting the island get to him.

If it wouldn't give him a basketball and hoop, he'd fix his problem himself. The basketball was an honest issue, sure, but he knew there had to be a way to at least make a hoop. He swore to himself if he ever found a way to learn how to weave it he would, and the bookshelf finally presented the opportunity when he found a book on basket weaving among the collection.

Bamboo.

Apparently he could make baskets out of bamboo, and with that knowledge in mind he collected a good bit of it to start his attempt. It took half a day to get what he needed together and prepare it, but the effort had been worth the trouble in his mind. At least it was keeping him occupied.

He sat down in the sand after he saw he had everything ready, starting to try to follow the instructions in the book. He was pleased to find he actually started to make progress after the initial mistakes. He smirked, unable to help feel a little smug.

Martha Stewart had nothing on him.
