Celebration Time...

Perhaps the best thing about a clear night on the island was the clarity of the sky. The stars shone in all their constellations, astonishingly bright to anyone who had lived in a world of electricity and light pollution, and the more Vianne saw of those stars, the more she came to appreciate them. Tonight, the sky made a mirror of the cleared area in front of the compound, where lights had been strung from tree to tree in the usual fashion of an island gathering. Vianne had kept herself busy in the kitchen between meals the last couple of days, turning out a few different varieties of pork and fish along with an apparently endless stack of fresh tortillas. As always, fresh fruit was in generous supply, along with a decent amount of sliced tomatoes and edible greens and pans of scalloped potatoes.

Coffee, tea and fresh fruit juice stood beside stacks of mugs and cups on a near table, ready for easy preparation. On the same table, Vianne had arranged a selection of pies--the customary strawberry, a somewhat experimental mango, and a respectable attempt at lemon meringue.

This evening's party was meant as a celebration of the newly appointed Island Council, and Vianne thought she and the rest of the kitchen staff had done quite well in their honor. A low hum of music came from the record player, both welcoming and enticing, but from the look of the gathering crowd, perhaps they could expect a little live entertainment for the evening, as well.
