There were people to whom sitting about with nothing to do but read or watch movies on an old projector would be more than enough to keep them occupied, but Keith ... well, it had kept him occupied for a while, but it was wearing thin.

He needed something to do, and it was a problem made all the more ridiculous by the fact there was something to do; there was a well-run police force, with officers who didn't need to refer to a dictionary when writing reports and who didn't think that catching criminals was like casting an actor, just a matter of finding someone who sounded about right and looked the part.

He had a reason, beyond being flattened by the weirdness of this island, and the way it kept throwing new and surprising sorts of strange at him; he'd been off his game ever since that massive screw-up with Kendall Casablancas and Cormac Fitzpatrick.

Which was no good reason at all, really, as he would have told Veronica had she come to him with a similar issue; you had to get back on the horse, or you'd just end up getting trampled further.

He made a note to remember that, since he thought it was a good line, and made a promise to himself to get on it. For now, though, now he was doing some exploring. You had to know your beat, after all, and better to get a feel for it now, before it would actually matter. He started with the beach, a slow, ambling walk, taking careful note of everything he saw. He kept an eye out for the spaceship, because, well, it was a spaceship. That was worth seeing even if you weren't scoping out the terrain.
