Was it really an anniversary if it hadn't actually been a year?

Jess had been thinking about it ever since Halloween, ever since being reminded of another Halloween that wasn't a year ago either. A Halloween that was the last time she and Sam had spent together in the real world, the day when Sam's brother had come for him and two days before Jess had come face to face with the creature that had changed everything, both in this timeline and the one which Sam told her had happened for him. The one in which she'd died.

November the second. She was never going to forget that date.

It didn't hurt really, not like she thought it might. It was less than three months ago for her now and while facing a demon still ranked pretty high among the weird and terrifying things that had happened in her life, it was no longer the only weird and terrifying thing. It was probably even a harder day for Sam than it was for her. For Sam it was the day he lost her, and it hadn't been three months, it'd been three years.

Jess sat on the compound steps in the sunshine and held a book in both hands, staring at the cover. If November second was going to be a day of changes - and there was no avoiding that now - then maybe she could be in control of the latest one. No more Dracula and Poltergeist and World War Z. This book was the real deal, hand lettered and hand bound and full of cryptic information on dealing with vengeful spirits. Jess didn't understand it all yet, but she would. If she kept at it, eventually it would make sense, and she planned to keep at it as long as it took.

Jess was all in.
