Chase was developing a bad habit of walking by the door of the church and continuing on like he hadn't seen it. Sure, he told himself that he'd go back on Sunday and he'd observe mass (even if he never did get far enough to bless the bread and wine, never did get to the point where he could summon transubstantiation with his fingertips). He told himself he'd sit in for confession, but the church sat quiet and he never went.
He was only there today because he had Nate and they were exploring. Exploring turned into 'no, don't, no touching the poisonous leaves, Nate!' in a panic and so Chase had corralled him and taken him up in his arms, supporting him as he walked up familiar paths until he arrived at the church.
"What's there?" Nate asked, pointing at the door. Chase took a deep breath, summoning up the most cheerful smile he could. God, he was a crap liar and it wasn't like he was even better at it with his son around.
"That is church," Chase replied, adjusting Nate on his hip with an exaggerated groan, arms snug tight around him. Nate had yet to call him anything like Dad or Father or anything like that. Chase wasn't even sure that he should be coaxing that kind of thing. He wasn't sure what Gwen would think of that, even if all he wanted was to take care of him. It didn't matter what he was called.
It wasn't Sunday, but it wasn't like it mattered. "Wanna go in?" Chase asked, biting back the part of his mind that wanted, desperately, for Nate to say 'no', but instead he got an emphatic nod and Chase took a deep breath.
He needed the damn shove. And he hated himself a little for it.
[ST/LT open through Wednesday and he is frozen just outside the doors of the church. All welcome!]
