Make no mistake: Disco was super cheesy. That doesn't mean that it wasn't also super fun. The whole point of the movement was being free and ridiculous, and even after living through the backlash in the Eighties when everyone conveniently forgot they'd been disco fiends, I had to give all those dancing queens credit for knowing how to have a good time.
It was really too bad that we didn't have a mirror ball to hang from the ceiling of the gym, because in every other respect, the room was perfect. With a little guidance, Gilderoy had decorated again, and I'd somehow managed to sweet talk Neil into playing Bee Gees and Abba. There were long tables with finger food and drinks after a long couple of days spent in the kitchen. The lights were down low and for people who had been unable to wrangle any skates from the box, I'd lined up all the pairs it had seen fit to give me since that first day.
Yeah, it was super cheesy. But it was also going to be a really good time.
